Orientation Letter for SOCI 208 -
Sociology of Death and Dying – SECTION 74610
Dear Students,
Welcome to this online edition of
Sociology 208: Sociology of Death and Dying. My name is Natalie
Buriel, and I will be your instructor for this online course. I
am looking forward to working with all of you this Spring
semester. After reading the following letter in its entirety,
please feel free to email me at natalie.buriel@canyons.edu
should you have any remaining questions or concerns. I will
respond as quickly as possible.
Although this class in 100% online and
we will not be meeting in a traditional classroom setting at a
regular set time, you will still be expected to commit to
visiting blackboard at least 3 times per week to participate in
board discussions and retrieve assignments. Class participation
will be checked on a weekly basis. All exams and assignments
will take place over the internet and everyone will be expected
to work at the same pace. There will be no make-ups at the end
of the course. This will take self-discipline and motivation on
your part in order to meet the set deadlines. If you are
enrolled in the class you should purchase the textbook
prior
to the start of the class and you should complete the Blackboard
Tutorial at the COC Distance Learning page: http://www.canyons.edu/offices/distance_learning/OnlineOrientation/.
You may login to the class website
starting on the first day of class on April 12th at
http://bb.canyons.edu.
You must log in to the course by April 13th (the
second day of the course) and post to the first discussion board
or you will be DROPPED as a "no show" and your place will be
given to those on the waitlist. Please keep in mind that
this is a short term class. This means that we will be covering
the same amount of material as a semester long class over a
condensed period of time, so be prepared to work at a faster
pace beginning the first week of class.
If you are unsure of your skill level
and whether or not you are ready to take a class online, you can
take an Online Readiness Assessment by visiting the COC Distance
Learning website (see additional resources below).
Please be advised that problems have
been found with Blackboard uploading files and using the textbox
feature with Microsoft Internet Explorer 8. Blackboard works
best with Internet Explorer 7 or Firefox.
Again, I look forward to working with
all of you and do not hesitate to email me with any questions or
concerns to make our time together as productive as possible.
Sincerely,
Natalie Buriel, Adjunct Professor of
Sociology
