Dear Students,
Welcome to REC 101 Recreation and Leisure in Contemporary
Society, Section 70450. I am Rhonda Hyatt, your
facilitator. This course is an introduction into the field of
Recreation and Leisure, it also counts as a general education
requirement and is transferable to CSU. This course will
challenge you to develop your own philosophy about recreation
and leisure pursuits and the value of leisure in your life.
Please review all of the information below regarding this online
course.
·
This is a 100% online course. We will not be meeting
face-to-face at all. The course will be available to you on the
first day of the semester.
·
Section 70450– starts on August 24th. You must log in AND
introduce yourself in the Discussion area during the first week
of the course or you will be dropped from the course.
LOGIN:
There is a significant amount of materials to cover in the
course, so it is important that you start the course on time. We
are using Blackboard as the course management system for this
course. Blackboard is the platform used for most of the courses
at COC.

Please note that the course will not be available
until the first day of the semester; so if you attempt to sign
into Blackboard, the program will not allow you access.
Remember, however, that you must sign in and introduce
yourself in the Discussion area during the first week.
TEXT and RELATED READINGS: You will need a
textbook (Yes, many online courses require a textbook). McLean,
D.; Hurd, A.; Roger, N.(2008). Kraus’ Recreation and Leisure in
Modern Society. 8th Edition. Sudbury, Massachusetts:
Jones and Bartlett. Additionally note there will be related
reading materials posted on Blackboard throughout the course.
Any edition of the book will work, the library has the text on
reserve. The text is $93.00 new or 69.75 used at the COC
bookstore.
EMAIL:
You will also need an active email address for this course. The
Blackboard link will instruct you on how to add your email
address into the Blackboard site.
COURSE SUCCESS: To achieve success in this course
you must have access to a computer and a reliable Internet
program. It is best if you have your own computer, but it is not
crucial. There are several locations on the Valencia and Canyon
Country campuses, and local libraries that you may access a
computer. High-speed Internet access is not mandatory, although
it will make your online learning experience more pleasant.
You should be prepared to log into this course several times per
week.
This course will be primarily asynchronous. This means
that you are not required to be present online at a set time.
Communication will primarily occur via “threaded discussions”
and emails which are located on the course Web site. I check my
email several times a day during the semester.
You will interact with the course material through reading
assignments, worksheets and quizzes, special assignments and
participation in discussion boards. You will benefit from
reading ahead, each week I will post the reading assignment for
the upcoming unit. You will find the worksheets and discussions
boards easier and faster to complete by reading ahead. You
must be prepared to participate in the discussion board items to
achieve the ultimate grade in the course.
If you have any questions or concerns, please contact me before
the course begins. See below for contact information.
Sincerely,
Rhonda Hyatt
