GMD 044 Introduction to Adobe
Illustrator Online Fall 2009
Class begins:
Students will not be able to access the
Blackboard site until the first day of class.
Dear Student:
I would like to introduce myself to you. I
am Kevin Jenkins Professor of Graphic Design at College of the
Canyons, and your instructor for this online course. Welcome to
an informative short- term course that will introduce you to the
use of Adobe Illustrator CS4 for digital illustration.
Many students register for
distance-learning courses believing that it will require less
time. Though you will spend less time in the classroom the art
of discovering information, and the responsibility of scheduling
this into your busy lives, will be on your shoulders. In
reality, many distance-learning courses are more of a time
commitment than a traditional lecture course.
There are several things you should be
aware of before we begin:
1. There are NO face-to-face meetings for
this course – it is completely online. It is ESSENTIAL that you
read through ALL course materials located on the course website.
The course website will be available beginning the first day of
class (please see the schedule of classes for specific date).
2. Course Website: http://bb7.canyons.edu/
(note there is NO “www”)
Please use link below for instructions on
logging in to Bb.

For assistance with the Blackboard site:
Distance Learning Home Page:
http://www.canyons.edu/distancelearning
or call 661-362-3344 or direct your
question via e-mail to bbsupport@canyons.edu
3. The first step after your login should
include resetting your password and entering your email address.
Both of these steps can be completed under the “Tools” menu and
then click “Personal Information”.
4. You should be computer literate, with
at least basic knowledge of Internet navigation and email
procedures. The college can only provide minimal technological
support. If you have any doubts an online evaluation tool is
available for you to test your online course readiness at:
Online Learning Readiness assessments: http://www.canyons.edu/offices/distance_learning/info/Assessments.asp
5. You must have access to a MAC or PC
computer that is equipped with the Adobe Illustrator CS4
software. We will be covering CS4, which is similar to earlier
versions of the software, but not exactly the same.
Note: You will be able to complete the
coursework and final project if you have any version of
Illustrator CS through CS4. I will be able to answer questions
directly related to CS4 since this is the version of the
software the course material covers.
The software is available for purchase at
http://www.uscollegebuy.com/0ab/asl.htm, as well as many other
websites that offer full versions of Adobe Illustrator CS4 at
student discount prices.
6. A subscription for the cost of 10 (Ten)
dollars to Lynda.com is also required.
Students must purchase this one-month
subscription, separate from the cost of the course. Instructions
for registering with Lynda.com are covered in the course
syllabus available the first day of class from the Bb site.
Note: You may want to visit and explore the
Lynda.com website but you will not be able to register or access
the instructional videos until the first day of the course.
There is no required text for this
course. However, you may want to purchase a technical manual
such as Adobe Illustrator CS4 Visual Quickstart Guide to assist
you in the course work.
7. The course will require approximately 6
hours of time per week and your presence on the class discussion
board is required at least twice a week.
Generally, each week you can expect to
complete the following coursework:
· View one to one and a half hours
of instructional videos per week.
· Review additional short
supplemental resources.
· Complete two projects for credit
in the course.
Note: This is a
credit/no credit course only.
· Participate in weekly online
discussions regarding any specific questions you have regarding
the subject.
· Complete an online exit survey.
If you have any questions please do not
hesitate to email me.
Sincerely,
Kevin Jenkins
