Dear Developmental Psychology (Psych 172) Student,

Welcome to an online edition of Developmental Psychology at College of the Canyons. My name is Tammy Mahan, and I will be your instructor throughout this course. Please read this entire letter for details about logging in to the course and the amount of work required.  If you have any additional questions after reading this letter in its entirety, please feel free to send me an email at tammy.mahan@canyons.edu .  I will get back to you as soon as possible.

In the beginning...
This course will be available on COC's Blackboard system beginning Monday, February 8th.  Instructions for logging in to Blackboard are located on the COC Distance Learning web site. Class officially begins on the MONDAY of your week of enrollment. You can and will be dropped from the class if you do not log in to Blackboard by 11:59pm on TUESDAY of the first week of enrollment.  No exceptions will be made. PLEASE NOTE: IT IS NOT MY RESPONSIBILITY TO DROP YOU FROM THE COURSE. IF YOU FAIL TO PARTICIPATE IN CLASS, AND DO NOT DROP THE COURSE ON YOUR OWN ACCORD, YOU WILL RECEIVE A "FW" IN THE COURSE. Once again, it is your responsibility to be accountable for your academic records. Failure to drop from the course due to lack of participation will result in a final grade of "FW" or "Failure to Withdraw."

Waitlisted students & adding the class...
All wait-listed students will receive priority. Availability will be determined on the first week of class. If 3 slots are available, the first three students off of the waitlist will be contacted and given add codes. If you are not contacted by the end of the first week, availability did not reach your waitlisted slot. I will NOT continue adding students into the second week of class.

Is everything for this class done online from the comfort of my own home?

(VERY IMPORTANT, PLEASE READ)
This course is 100% online with the exception of EXAMS. All exams must be taken either at the TLC lab through College of the Canyons, or through an approved proctoring facility. It is your responsibility to arrange for a proctor and contact Renee McConnell in the TLC (661) 362-3349. All arrangements need to be made in a timely manner. Please NOTE: When interacting with the staff at the TLC, it is important to uphold the highest level of respect and integrity. Please come prepared with your ID. No notes are allowed. You are also NOT allowed to open any other windows while taking the test. If you are caught doing so, you will AUTOMATICALLY be referred to the Dean for a code of conduct violation for cheating. You are not allowed to access email or any other systems during the exam. No cell phones, Ipods, etc. will be allowed with you while testing.

Required Materials and Technology
You will need to purchase the following textbook as soon as possible:

      1. "Human Development- A Lifespan View," 5th ed., Kail & Cavanaugh

Given that this is an online course, you will need to have a computer with reliable internet access and a valid e-mail address. If you do not have a computer elsewhere and are local to COC you can use the computers on campus, either in the library or in the Tutorial Lab in I-209.  It is your responsibility to ensure that you check your email on a regular basis and have an accurate email address on file.  It is also your responsibility to ensure that you have a reliable internet connection and all of the appropriate equipment to complete the course content. Please check your email address both within Blackboard and Mycanyons.

Are You Ready for Online Coursework?
As noted above, your work for this class will be completed using Blackboard, an online course management system.  Although not a requirement, it will be very helpful if you are familiar with using internet browser software (such as Netscape, Internet Explorer, Firefox, etc.), with sending and receiving e-mail, as well as attaching a file to an e-mail message. If you are unsure of your skill level and whether or not you are ready to take a class online, you may want to visit this site to take a number of self-assessment surveys.

About Your Instructor and Her Expectations:
I have taught Developmental Psychology on numerous occasions within the traditional classroom.  Despite the fact that the online environment is somewhat different that the traditional environment, it posses both new challenges and benefits.

Due to the fact that this is an online course, it is going to move very quickly.  You will need to be both prepared and ready for the challenge.  Testing will be administered by the TLC lab at College of the Canyons, and/or will need to be proctored at a location nearest you. If you need to set up proctoring, please contact Renee McConnell at (661) 362-3349.   In addition to the exams, you will have online assignments, discussion boards, and quizzing.  You will need to pay very close attention to the due dates of all of these assignments. All assignments are DUE BY 10:00 PM on the assigned due date.  Students will need to login to the course website at least 4 times per week.  I expect students to invest a minimum of 10-12 hours per week into this course. Please feel free to contact me if you should have any additional questions and/or concerns.  Thank you and Good Luck!
