Introduction to College and Strategies for Success ~
Fall 2009 (#70826) - 9/28/09-10/31/09
I am very pleased that you have made the choice of enrolling in
my Counseling 111 course. This indicates that you take your
education seriously and are ready to learn how to be a
successful college student.
This course will provide you with an overview of the community
college environment, its resources, and to gain self-awareness.
The goal of this course is to prepare you for the challenges of
college (COC and transfer universities) by encouraging your
individual initiative, study skills, building your confidence,
and introducing you to campus-wide student services.
Topics include student rights/responsibilities, important
college policies and procedures, study skills, learning styles,
time management, college resources, choosing a major and career,
academic-transfer requirements, multi-cultural awareness, stress
management, and various topics relating to educational planning
and success.
This is a 100%
on-line class and you will be using Blackboard (http://www.canyons.edu/offices/distance_learning/BBSupport/BbLogin.asp)
to complete your
assignments. It is important that you have access to a computer
and check Blackboard at least every other day, if not every day
to keep up with your assignments. If this is the first time
taking an on-line class consider doing Counseling 070 Becoming a
Successful Distance Learning Student. For more information

I have designed the
class so that you are actively involved every week with the
current readings and topics. Be ready to participate and share
about yourself! The textbook required for the class is
The Community College Experience,
Amy Baldwin, 2nd
Edition.
I guarantee you it
will be fun as well as a learning opportunity. If you need to
reach me, please email me at
concepcion.perez@canyons.edu and write Counseling 111 on the
subject line. I want you to know that I am here to help in
anyway I can to make your transition at COC a smooth and
enjoyable one. Together we can work towards making sure that
you have the necessary tools to succeed in college!
Again, thank you for enrolling in my
Counseling 111 class. I look forward to working with you
during the semester!
Have a wonderful Fall semester!
