Dear Student,

Welcome to Counseling 070, Distance Learning Strategies and Success!   This course begins August 24, 2009 and ends September 26, 2009.

You have registered for a 100% online class. We will have no in person meetings.  All course work will be completed online using Blackboard, so I do recommend that you complete one of the Blackboard tutorials PRIOR to the first day of class.  You can access the tutorials at the following addresses:

http://www.canyons.edu/offices/Distance_Learning/blackboard/Bbtutorial.asp

http://www.canyons.edu/BBTutorial

This course will provide you with the skills necessary to be a successful online student. The goal of this course is to quickly acquire the basic skills necessary to be successful in online courses.  After completing this course, you should be able to:

·        Use both synchronous and asynchronous chat

·        Set priorities and manage your time using a weekly planner

·        Develop word documents

·        Identify your learning style

·        Use the internet for research

·        Utilize the features of Blackboard

·        Define online course/ internet terminology

·        Identify online resources

·        Gain self-awareness of your own readiness for distance education

In order to take this class, you must have access to a computer, internet services and e-mail. All communications are done through e-mail, chat rooms or the discussion board.  If you are unfamiliar with these forms of communication, we will discuss them in depth and you will have the opportunity to put them to use.

Keep in mind that this is a 5-week course.  You will be expected to log onto the blackboard site at least every other day. I will be posting announcements, assignments, discussion items, and quizzes that you will be expected to participate in each week. Keep in mind that while an online course allows you the freedom to access the class and work on assignments at your convenience, there will be deadlines for submitting all quizzes, assignments and discussions.  All work must be submitted by the posted due dates. No late work will be accepted.

You will not be able to sign into Blackboard until the first day of class

In order to log-in you will need a username and password.  Your user name is your 7 digit student ID number (not your social security number).  Your password will be student.  After you have logged in, you will have the option to change your password.   Please write down your password as this will be your password to log into future Blackboard courses.
