Dear Early Childhood Education 120 Student,

Welcome to ECE 120 – 73282 Online.  This course covers child growth and development from birth to adolescence.  It is 100% online and there will be no face to face meetings.

In order to take this class, you must have access to a computer, reliable internet services and email.  All communication is done through email and discussion boards.  You can use your own computer or you can use the computers on campus or at local libraries.  Keep in mind that you will need to access your online course at least three to four times per week to be successful.

If this is your first online class, you may want to take the self-assessments that are geared towards helping you to determine if taking a course online is a right fit for you.  You can access those self-assessments by going to the College of the Canyon website and clicking on the online button on the home page.  There you will find the links to those self-assessments, along with some other helpful information.

You may find the following links helpful for your success in the course:

This course is using the Blackboard course management system.  You can find the link on the College of the Canyons home page as well.  The course will be made available on February 8, 2010 which is the official start date of the course.  You will not be able to access the course until that date.  Make sure to login and enter the discussion board and read over the syllabus to ensure that you are enrolled in the class.  Any student who has not logged on the first day the class begins will be dropped as a No Show.

If you are not officially enrolled in the class, you need to be on the waitlist in order to be considered for the course.  I will contact you the first week to let you know if I have any openings.

The textbook for the course is Child Development 8th ed., by Laura Berk.  The publisher is Allyn and Bacon.

Should you have any questions, please email me at wendy.ruiz@canyons.edu.  I will respond to you within 48 hours.

Sincerely,
