Program Overview

Who's Eligible?

You may qualify if you have any of the following:
  • An identified learning disability or a history of difficulties in school
  • Memory problems
  • Recent stroke or head trauma
  • Hearing impairment
  • Visual impairment
  • Identified psychological disorders
  • Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD or ADHD)
  • Communication disorders
  • Other Physical disabilities
Students may qualify for DSP&S services by one of two ways:  1) students may complete the assessment for eligibility into the learning disabilities program or 2) provide verification of their disability to the DSP&S office.  The DSP&S staff must review all verification before a student is accepted into the program.

Educational Objectives

DSP&S serves as a support for students are interested in the following objectives:
  • Certificate Programs
  • Associate of Arts or Science degrees
  • Transfer programs to four year institutions
  • Basic Skills classes
  • Enrichment classes for job training, personal information, and enjoyment

How to Access DSP&S Services

A student interested in utilizing DSP&S services must follow the procedure below:
  1. File an application to College of the Canyons or be a student enrolled at the college.
  2. Take the placement test (Bonelli Hall, Room 205)
  3. For students with verified disabilities, bring documentation to the DSP&S office.
  4. Meet with the DSP&S Director or Counselor to discuss difficulties you are experiencing.

Program Philosophy

Philosophy:   To create an environment where students may realize their potential. DSP&S believes in maintaining academic integrity, and encourages realistic choices for academic and vocational goals.

Purpose:    To provide support services that recognizes the worth and value of students with disabilities and encourages students to become functioning, productive, and contributing members of our society.

Program Overview

College of the Canyons provides educational services and access for eligible students with documented disabilities who intend to pursue coursework at COC.  A variety of  programs and services are available which afford eligible students with disabilities the opportunity to participate fully in all aspects of the college programs and  activities  through appropriate and reasonable accommodations.
