The Ability to Benefit test allows students to become eligible to receive student financial aid funds. The student must be qualified to study at the postsecondary level. For student financial aid purposes, a student with a high school diploma or its recognized equivalent is considered qualified.

Students without a diploma or equivalent can be eligible for student financial aid funds if he or she passes an approved ATB test.

You must complete and pass all three parts (Math, Reading, and Sentence Skills) of the Ability-To-Benefit Test in one session. You are allowed three attempts to pass the Ability-To-Benefit Test in a six month period, April to November or November to April.

If you do not pass the test on the third attempt, you will not be eligible for student financial aid until you either receive your high school diploma or complete your General Education Development Certificate (GED) or pass the ATB in the next six month period.

Step 1
– Students may visit Financial Aid to obtain the appropriate ATB information. The information is also online at the Financial Aid information page.

Step 2 - Drop in the Assessment Center during ATB testing hours. Bring your picture ID and be sure to tell a staff member you will be taking the ATB test. Because of new regulations from the Federal government students can only take the ATB test by itself. You will not be able to take the Assessment test and the ATB test at the same time.

Step 3 – The results of your ATB test are placed in your College of the Canyons record. Once you have completed and passed the ATB test, you MUST notify the Financial Aid Office in order to begin your application process. Your financial aid application will NOT be processed without notification from you.

**ATB testing will not be available for the following dates
September 7th through September16th**

HOW MANY TIMES CAN I TAKE THE ATB TEST?

Within any three-month period, ATB candidates may be permitted an initial test and one retest.  There should be a two week waiting period between the initial test and the retest.  If the candidate does not pass after the retest, he/she must wait three months from the date of the initial test.  All retesting must be done on the ATB testing site.

WHAT IF I CANNOT PASS THE ATB TEST?
Failure to pass the initial test and retest means you are NOT eligible for Federal financial aid until you receive your high school diploma, complete your General Education Development Certificate (GED) or complete six degree applicable units.
I’VE COMPLETED & PASSED THE ATB TEST, NOW WHAT?
Once you have completed and passed the ATB test, you MUST notify the Financial Aid Office in order to begin your application process. Your financial aid application will NOT be processed without notification from you.
