About Classified Development Day:

In 1998, with the approval of the Board of Trustees and Dr. Dianne Van Hook, Superintendent-President, College of the Canyons established a comprehensive professional development program that would provide opportunities to all members of the college staff. This decision resulted in the establishment of three staff development committees: the Administrative Development Committee, the Classified Development Committee, and the Faculty Development Committee.

The Classified Development Committee consists of volunteer members whose role is to plan and provide staff development activities to all members of the classified staff. Their planning resulted in the Classified Development Day-a first time opportunity for COC staff to attend a day of workshops on campus.

This day gives you a choice between working your regular assignment or attending planned activities. We hope that you will choose to participate in the scheduled events, not only for the wonderful and informative workshops, but also for the quality time that you will share with your peers.

Workshops in Session#1

9:00 – 10:00am

#485S Keys to Being an Effective Team Member in the Workplace

Presenter: Dr. Dianne Van Hook, Chancellor
Room: ALLH 101

What makes a team effective, productive and efficient? Teams who thrive exude passion and energy towards the same mission, vision and goals. Each person on the team is responsible for bringing their best ideas, energy and creativity to the team. What causes a disruption or conflict within teams? Different styles of managing our workload, communicating with others, and personal values are often sources of conflict in the workplace, particularly since we now have four generations working in the same workplace. This session will explore how our words, communication styles, attitudes and behavior affect the level of performance within the team and how it can have positive and negative effects on the other members of the team.

Dr. Van Hook will provide you with tools and strategies you can use to manage differences, resolve conflicts, and improve communication in the work place. You will also learn how to provide leadership for productive problem-solving efforts in your team, how to build strong working relationships, and understand the importance of having a positive attitude each day you come to work.

Learning outcomes: By the end of this session, you will have learned:

• Strategies you can use that will help you be a positive and effective contributor to the teams of which you are a member
• How to identify and correct behavior that does not promote teamwork
• How to effectively handle less effective behavior and help a person displaying such behavior become a valued contributor to the team
• The importance of communicating effectively and clearly
• The value and benefits of coming to work each day with a positive, can-do attitude

#486S Emergency Preparedness

Presenters: Dr. Michael Wilding, Dr. Barry Gribbons, Mr. Jim Schrage, Mr. John McElwain
Room: TWSH 106

Most everyone knows that College of the Canyons has published its Emergency Operations Plan and that it includes a lot of information about organizational structure, general “do’s” and “don’ts” that apply to certain emergency scenarios, and information on how the college will interact with other agencies if a major, catastrophic event takes place. But paper plans don’t respond to emergencies; people do! And, as Shakespeare’s Hamlet would say, “Ay, there’s the rub.”

Attend this session to engage in a frank, information-filled discussion about the realities of emergency plan implementation that will answer the most important question of all, “What, specifically, do I do when a real emergency occurs?” You will also learn about the roles we will all play if/when disaster strikes.

Learning Outcomes: By the end of this session, participants will understand the District’s emergency plan and what their role is when an emergency situation arises.

#487S Overview of the New Datatel Interface, Web UI

Presenter: Mr. Michael Brezina
Room: BONH 106

This Web UI workshop will introduce you to the new interface and give you an overview of how to navigate through it. We will examine the new features, the log in screen, navigate around Web UI, and learn how to customize the look and feel to your personal tastes.

Learning outcome: By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to navigate Datatel using the new Web UI interface.

Workshops in Session#2

10:15 – 11:15am

#488S Helping Students in Need

Presenters: Mr. Michael Joslin, Ms. Tammy Castor, Ms. Colleen Reeves
BYKH 108  LTLC 160

Members of the District’s Behavioral Intervention Team (BIT) will present information about Kognito, an online suicide intervention and prevention training program and lead a discussion about addressing the needs of students who struggle with mental disorders.

Learning Outcomes: By the end of this session, participants will be able to:
• Recognize when a student is exhibiting signs of psychological distress
• Approach and discuss your concern with a student in distress

#489S The SCCCD Board of Trustees: Their Roles and Responsibilities

Presenters: Members of the SCCCD Board of Trustees
Room: TWSH 128

The goal of this interactive session is to improve communication and better understand what's working well and what challenges you are experiencing, all in an effort to work together to move the college forward in the next year. At this session, the Board members will provide an overview of their roles and responsibilities, and staff will have an opportunity to let the board members know the innovative and exciting projects, initiatives, or community involvement they are a part of and would like to share. In addition, the Board members invite and welcome productive dialogue, comments, questions, concerns, challenges, ideas and solutions from the staff participants on any topic relevant to the College.

Learning Outcomes: By the end of this session, participants will have had an opportunity to engage in dialogue with the Board members in an effort to understand each other’s roles.

#490S Overview of the New Datatel Interface, Web UI

Presenter: Mr. Michael Brezina
Room: BONH 106

This Web UI workshop will introduce you to the new interface and give you an overview of how to navigate through it. We will examine the new features, the log in screen, navigate around Web UI, and learn how to customize the look and feel to your personal tastes.

Learning outcome: By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to navigate Datatel using the new Web UI interface.

#491S Designing Your Workspace to be Ergonomically Correct

Room: ALLH 108

Ergonomics is the relationship between people and their computers, chairs and office equipment. Better comfort and function of your workspace leads to:
• Less fatigue – it takes more energy to sit and work in an incorrect posture. Set your office workspace up to fit your body and you won’t become as tired.

• Increased productivity – being comfortable on the job will allow you to get more work done in less time.
Attend this session to learn how to adjust your work station, including where to place the monitor, keyboard and mouse. You will also learn how to adjust your chair properly and learn some stretches you can do right at your desk to improve your posture and keep fatigue and aching shoulders and backs at bay.

Learning Outcome: By the end of this session, participants will have learned how to adjust the monitor, keyboard, mouse and chair to be ergonomically correct.

#492S Emergency Preparedness
