GUIDELINES
The program or activity has, as its
principal goal, the development of
professional growth in the pursuit
of the mission and in support of the
vision of College of the Canyons.
MISSION
College of the Canyons is a
learning-centered community college
that provides academic education and
workforce training at the lower
division level, to all capable of
profiting from instruction. The
faculty and staff promote
substantive personal growth and
intellectual progress of learners,
by combining time-proven concepts
with the latest technological
advances.
VISION
College of the Canyons is dedicated
to enhancing our reputation as a
leading two-year college, recognized
locally, regionally and statewide
for technical advancement,
institutional effectiveness, student
support, model academic and
professional programs, excellence in
teaching and learning, and the sense
of community that we provide to our
students and staff.
THE MISSION OF PROFESSIONAL
DEVELOPMENT
The
mission of the Santa Clarita
Community College District’s
Professional Development Program is
to improve and sustain the
professional growth of district
employees through collegially
planned learning opportunities that
continue to support the
institution’s strategic goals.
A FLEX workshop or activity
must have, as its principal goal,
one or more of the following:
Developing and refining the practice
of teaching lower division college
courses, and understanding learning
at the lower division level.
· Developing faculty leadership or
managerial skills, in the classroom
and in the pursuit of division,
departmental and committee duties.
· Learning about the improvement of
college working-group relationships.
· Learning technological skills for
use in the classroom or faculty
office.
· Learning job-place skills (i.e.
disaster preparedness, online
purchasing).
· Understanding and developing the
practice of advising, communicating
with, or mentoring students.
· Developing faculty research
skills.
· Developing a multicultural
understanding and awareness among
the faculty of our diverse student
body.
· Developing a cross-disciplinary
understanding and awareness.
· Improving knowledge in one's
discipline.
The test for compliance with
these guidelines is three-fold:
I. Is the primary goal of the
activity professional growth in the
achievement of the mission of the
college, its vision, and the mission
of professional development?
II. Is accomplishment of the
activity of sufficient benefit to
justify time spent?
III. Does the activity fall outside
expected departmental and other
faculty duties?

PRE-APPROVED
BY THE OFFICE OF PROFESSIONAL
DEVELOPMENT. FLEX CREDIT
WILL NOT BE GIVEN IF
PROPOSALS ARE NOT PRE-APPROVED.
