R.K. Downs Invitational Jazz Festival Returns
High School and College Bands, Special Guest to Appear
There’s more to teen music than just Britney Spears and the Backstreet Boys and four local high schools bands will prove it. Jazz bands from Valencia, Hart, Canyon and Saugus high schools will highlight a solid day of fluid jazz during the annual R.K. Downs Invitational Jazz Festival on Saturday, Feb. 15, from 10:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. at College of the Canyons.
Also in attendance will be the sultry sounds of the Latin Jazz Combo form California Institute of the Arts, as well as the cool grooves of the College of the Canyons Studio Jazz Ensemble.
Adding an extra dimension of excitement will be guest artist Gary Foster. Foster, a master clinician of sax, clarinet and flute and longtime friend of legendary College of the Canyons conductor Dirk Fischer, has worked with dozens of the biggest names in show business, including Barbra Streisand, Mel Torme, Natalie Cole and Frank Sinatra. Foster also has numerous TV and motion picture soundtracks to his credit, including "Batman and Robin," "The Patriot," "Pearl Harbor," "Far From Heaven" and "Chicago."
Held at the College of the Canyons Student Center, the festival is free for anyone who wishes to attend, although a $5 donation is greatly appreciated.
“Be prepared to be immersed in an afternoon of joyous music from the young people of this community,” said Fischer. “They’re not all garage musicians, you know.”
