News Release Home FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE No. COC-03-17-09-Doll’sHouse-JMU March 17, 2009 Students to Perform in Tony Award-Winning Production The College of the Canyons Theatre Department will present the Tony Award-winning revival “A Doll’s House” in the Black Box theatre at the Santa Clarita Performing Arts Center at College of the Canyons in April. Described by Time magazine as a “thunderclap of an evening that takes your breath away,” “A Doll’s House” has been a controversial play since its original release in 1879 due to its revelation of the realities of marriage and restricted female roles during the Victorian era. However, even after more than 100 years of progress and enlightenment, the play still remains universally relevant today, says Susan Hinshaw, theatre instructor at the college and director of the production. “Some people see this play as a museum piece. I definitely do not, nor do any of the designers,” Hinshaw said. “We wanted this production to express the universality of the play, so we’ve come up with several ways of doing that.” One unique aspect of the production is the decision to direct the play as an arena, or theatre-in-the-round, production. In addition, each of the three different acts will be set in a different time period -- ranging from the Victorian age to the 1950s and ending in the present. “It’s a way of showing that these issues are still alive and with us today,” Hinshaw said. “Our scenic designer, Brodie Steele, has designed a beautiful set, and our students are being challenged and having a great deal of fun while working in-the-round. It’s a very exciting process.” The College of the Canyons production of “A Doll’s House” will open in the Black Box theatre Thursday, April 2, and run through Sunday, April 5. Show times are as follows: - Thursday, April 2, at 8 p.m.
- Friday, April 3, at 8 p.m.
