Theatre Productions Offer ‘New Works’ and ‘Delightful Disorientations’
Community members looking to have a laugh, or add a little "drama" to their lives need look no farther than the Santa Clarita Performing Arts Center (PAC) and College of the Canyons theatre department’s schedule of spring performances.
Kicking off the spring season will be the production “Delightful Disorientation: The World According to David Ives,” which features a handpicked selection of contemporary playwright David Ives’ best one-act plays.
Included in the production are “The Philadelphia” in which a man must ask for the opposite of what he wants while dining in a restaurant; “Words, Words, Words,” the story of three chimpanzees attempting to write Shakespeare; and “Time Flies,” the tale of two mayflies burdened by the knowledge of their own mortality.
Known for possessing a combination of wit, intellect and an absurd sense of fun, Ives’ characterizations, comedic timing and verbal hijinks are sure to leave the audience in a state of hilarity.
“We have a terrific company of actors from our theatre program involved in this production. I am continually impressed by the creative energy and commitment they bring to our productions,” said Paul Wickline, COC theatre department chair. “We look forward to sharing these short, masterful Ives’ comedies with audiences.”
“Delightful Disorientation: The World According to David Ives” will run nightly at 8 p.m. Wednesday, April 14, through Saturday, April 17, with a special 2 p.m. matinee performance Sunday, April 18.
All performances will be held in the PAC Black Box theatre. General admission is $10 or $5 for COC students and seniors. This production contains adult language and mature subject matter.
Later in the month, the College of the Canyons New Works Festival (NWF) returns to the stage for its 10th year.
A collaboration between the COC English and theater departments, each year the New Works Festival provides aspiring playwrights the opportunity to develop their works through a series of readings, discussions, revisions -- and eventually rehearsals and performances.
Each playwright actively participates in the process, collaborating throughout the spring semester with COC instructors, student actors, fellow writers and industry professionals to see their work on stage.
“Each year the New Works Festival provides a unique opportunity for unheralded playwrights to develop their work and expand their talents," said David Stears, NWF director. “We invite the community to experience the passion and creativity of these writers firsthand, as we celebrate the festival’s 10th anniversary.”
The 2010 New Works Festival will run nightly at 8 p.m. Wednesday, April 28, through Saturday, May 1, with a special 2 p.m. matinee performance Sunday, May 2.
NWF productions may contain adult language and mature subject matter. Admission is free, with seating on a first come, first served basis. All performances will be held in the PAC Black Box theatre.
The College of the Canyons theatre department’s lineup of spring productions will serve as part of the college’s ongoing 40th Anniversary celebration.
