College to Offer More Summer Classes, Despite Budget Cuts

The effects of the global recession are being felt everywhere, and everyone is looking for ways to do more with less. College of the Canyons is no different, and despite ongoing budget cuts to the state’s higher education systems, the college will be offering more than 300 class sections this summer, an increase of approximately 100 class sections from the college’s summer 2010 schedule.

The 300-plus class sections being offered are primarily “core” classes that students need to either graduate, transfer to a four-year school and/or meet course prerequisites associated with their immediate educational plans. All summer session courses have also been selected based on their high demand.

The increase in course offerings comes as a result of a decision the college made late last year to save money by offering a reduced schedule of classes during winter session, so that more sections could instead be offered during the summer.

“We always try to balance our course offerings, so we evaluate every term and look to see where the demand is,” said Audrey Green, associate vice president of academic affairs for the college. “Offering more classes during the summer session, when student demand is much higher, just made sense.”

To provide students with some schedule flexibility, the college is also offering a choice of starting dates and class lengths. The first five-week summer session runs June 6 to July 8, a second eight-week session will run June 13 to Aug. 5, and the final five-week session will run July to Aug. 12.

The college’s summer session schedule is now posted online at www.canyons.edu. A printed schedule of classes will not be offered to students.

Summer session registration for continuing students is scheduled to begin on Monday, May 9. New student registration will begin on Monday, May 23, with a final late registration period scheduled to begin Wednesday, June 1.

However, with several community colleges in the region either not offering a Summer Session, or only offering a limited schedule, classes are expected to fill quickly.

With that in mind, college officials are encouraging students not to wait until the last minute to apply to the college and/or register for summer classes. Below is a list of registration tips all students should keep in mind:

  • Make sure the college’s Admissions and Records office has your current email, telephone number and postal addresses so that the college can provide you with up-to-date information regarding your registration time/date.
  • Know what classes you really want and sign up for them during your registration period. Once you are registered for a class, only cancel it if you are absolutely sure of your decision.
  • Check the online schedule of classes frequently for updated class listings and/or changes.

In addition, students should be reminded that summer 2011 is the last term that they will be charged a $26-per-unit enrollment fee. Beginning in fall 2011, the state has mandated that all California community colleges begin charging a $36-per-unit fee.
