College Offers Mandarin Chinese for First Time Starting in the fall semester, the College of the Canyons Foreign Language Department will offer Mandarin Chinese language classes for the first time. "Mandarin Chinese was added to the foreign language department in response to a state and national initiative to include Asian languages in the educational system," said Gina Bogna, COC curriculum coordinator. The course will place an emphasis in developing essential skills in communication, such as speaking, understanding and reading and writing Chinese characters. The course will also introduce geography, customs and culture of China. The course will be equivalent to the first two years of high school-level Chinese.
