College to Hold 'First Year Experience' Orientation Meetings

Incoming College of the Canyons freshmen who have enrolled in the college’s new First Year Experience (FYE) program are invited to attend one of the upcoming FYE orientation sessions being held July 26 to 29, on the COC Valencia campus.

The FYE program is designed to help incoming freshmen make the difficult transition from high school to college by preparing students for success during their first year of attendance at College of the Canyons.

“We’re trying to give students all the tools they need early in their college experience to ensure a positive start to their college career and hopefully encourage students to continue their studies,” said Audrey Green, COC associate vice president of academic affairs.

First Year Experience student orientation sessions will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday, July 26, Tuesday, July 27, Wednesday, July 28, and Thursday, July 29. The parent portion of the event will be held from 8:30 a.m. to noon each day.

Each orientation session is limited to 75 students and 25 parents, with students/parents only required to attend one session. To be eligible to register for an orientation session students must have previously attended one of the college’s Cougar Day events held during the spring 2010 semester, placed below college level in English and/or math, selected an academic area of emphasis and have a valid COC student ID number.

On the day of the orientation students must also bring a printed copy of their assessment results, as well as the results from the Cougar Day interest inventory.

During the orientation session students will have the chance to meet with faculty, learn about specific majors and academic areas of interest, network with COC peer mentors and become more familiar with the campus and its many operations. The morning segment of the orientation will also include tips and information for parents about how to support an adult student.

“Instead of the traditional online orientation we want the ability to talk with incoming freshmen face-to-face,” Green said. “By educating students and parents about what can be expected in a college classroom and helping them to identify an appropriate academic or career path, it’s our hope that students will go on to be more successful in all that they undertake.”

FYE orientation registration will remain open through Sunday, July 25.
