Volunteers Needed for Science, Engineering Education

Continually exploring new and innovative ways to enhance the academic experience associated with the college’s science and engineering programs, the College of the Canyons Mathematics, Sciences and Engineering Technologies (MSET) division is currently looking to establish partnerships with individuals interested in advancing technology-based education in the Santa Clarita Valley.

The fast-paced developments in the science and technological fields combined with the budget restraints associated with the current economic climate and lack of adequate resources are sure to place considerable stress on the educational community for the foreseeable future.

To address this challenge, the college’s MSET division has launched the Volunteers in Partnership (VIP) program in order to establish a series of collaborative partnerships with local volunteers interested in opportunities to share their knowledge and expertise in an academic setting.

What does a VIP volunteer do?

VIP volunteers work alongside College of the Canyons faculty, adjunct faculty and staff to assist with and enhance the day-to-day operations associated with classroom and laboratory instruction. Volunteer opportunities are available in biology, chemistry, physics, engineering, nanotechnology manufacturing and mathematics.

Who can volunteer?

VIP welcomes all volunteers with a math, science, engineering or technology background and relevant professional experience. Specifically, VIP is seeking volunteers who:

  • Can serve as positive role models for College of the Canyons students.
  • Are outgoing, friendly and enjoy working as part of a team while interacting with students and division faculty and staff.
  • Are interested in enhancing the math, science, engineering and technology-based programs at the college.
  • Understand the importance of the college’s technology-based course offerings and their relation to the well-being of the SCV -- and both the state and nation’s future economies.

When can one volunteer?

VIP volunteer commitments are flexible and can be scheduled around each volunteer’s personal schedule.

What are the benefits of being a VIP volunteer?

In addition to the personal satisfaction that comes from working with students and promoting student success and academic achievement, VIP volunteers will know what it means to part of the College of the Canyons family.

The college is a great place for community members to share their time, talents and experiences while helping to promote the type of student success and academic achievement that is so beneficial to local communities.

How does one participate?

Prospective VIP volunteers, with appropriate professional background and resume, are encouraged to contact Dr. Ram Manvi, MSET division dean, at ram.manvi@canyons.edu or call (661) 362-3135.
