ELS Language Center Accepting Students at University Center
The ELS Language Center will resume classes at the Interim University Center in early December, following a nearly two-year hiatus caused by the restructuring of the INS into U.S. Citizenship & Immigration Services, a bureau of the Department of Homeland Security. Classes designed to improve English skills of non-immigrant students are scheduled to begin on Dec. 6.
ELS assesses students English skills in reading, speaking, writing, grammar and vocabulary, then assigns them the most appropriate classes. Completion of advanced ELS classes can waive the TOEFL requirement for undergraduate study in more than 500 U.S. colleges and universities, including College of the Canyons.
ELS students come from many different countries. They may arrange their own living accommodations or have ELS arrange accommodations with English-speaking host families, often referred to as "Homestay." Students in a Homestay often develop close relationships with their hosts while simultaneously learning English faster, sharing the customs and culture of their native country, and actively participating in the American way of life.
For more information, go to http://www.els.edu/santaclarita or call (661) 362-5554. The latter number also may be used to request information on becoming a Homestay provider.
The Interim University Center, located on the College of the Canyons campus, features a wide variety of degree programs offered by a collection of public and private universities.
