Model UN Team Wins Awards in Competition With Universities

College of the Canyons Model U.N. members Dan Monteleone and Shawn Feldman representing the Russian Federation in the General Assembly and the nation of Kuwait in the Arab League, respectively each took home an award for "Outstanding Delegate" during the California Model United Nations Conference in Anaheim last weekend. In doing so, College of the Canyons became the only college at the conference to earn more than one award.

"I'm very proud of their work," said Political Science professor and Model U.N. advisor Dr. Majid Mosleh, who also teaches the Model U.N. class at College of the Canyons, Political Science 210. "Especially Dan for his efforts in the General Assembly, which is a hugely competitive arena. He must have said some fantastic things."

The conference hosted 23 different schools from throughout California, including four-year universities such as UC Irvine, UC Riverside, and teams from California State Universities, Northridge, Long Beach, Los Angeles and San Marcos. Teams were also present from private colleges, community colleges and a few high schools.

In the competition, students are assigned to represent a specific country or International Governmental Organization, such as the World Health Organization. Each student researches the topics presented to them, then debates those topics from the roleof their country or organization.
