FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE No. COC-NR.11.15.10-MedAd-JMC November 15, 2010
Groundbreaking Ceremony for Library Expansion Project
Subject: Groundbreaking Ceremony
When: 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 16, 2010
Where: College of the Canyons Library (rear parking lot)
Contact: John McElwain, (661) 362-5604; Eric Harnish (661) 362-3400
Event: A groundbreaking ceremony for the 51,000-square-foot, $16 million College of the Canyons Library Expansion Project. Forty percent of the project is being funded by Measure M, a general-obligation bond passed by local voters in November 2006, while 60 percent is from a statewide bond measure also passed by voters in 2006.
The expansion includes group-study rooms, providing students more meeting areas for collaboration. It will also add a Special Collections display and storage area that will allow for rotating shows of student and community art. A new Computer Commons area with 100 workstations will more than double the number of computers available to students and community members.
The expansion will also allow the college’s Learning Center to move from Bonelli Hall and expand its services to students. The demand for tutoring services has grown steadily over the years. In just the first 10 weeks of the current semester, the center has provided 35,000 hours of tutoring, compared to 13,000 hours in fall 1990. The number of students served has increased too, from 2,300 in 1990 to 4,500 today.
The library expansion is expected to open in fall 2012.
Speaking at the event will be Mrs. Michele Jenkins, vice president of the college’s Board of Trustees; Dr. Dianne G. Van Hook, chancellor of College of the Canyons; Mr. Jan Keller, the college’s founding librarian; and Mr. James Glapa-Grossklag, dean, educational technology, learning resources and distance learning.
