University Center Adds Doctoral Degree Program
The University Center at College of the Canyons will offer a doctoral program in organizational leadership through the University of La Verne beginning in September 2005.
The primary focus of the program is the application of leadership theory to the processes and practices of administration in education, proprietary organization, private and public businesses, and the military, said Dr. Barbara Poling, chair of La Vernes program.
The three-year program, one of the leading organizational leadership programs in the nation, has been in existence for more than 25 years and operates at 20 locations throughout the western U.S.
The program is an innovative blend of student-faculty interactions, practicums, community events and workshops. Students meet in their assigned regional mentor teams, attend practicums to demonstrate their skills and engage in on-line instruction throughout the year. Each year culminates with an eight-day community event at the universitys main campus that involves all students and faculty in an interactive, experiential learning seminar and celebration.
For those who already hold a California Preliminary Administrative Services Credential, the Professional Administrative Services Credential may be secured by completing the doctoral coursework. For those who already hold a California Professional Administrative Services Credential, advanced placement may waive up to nine semester hours of coursework.
Additional information about the program can be found at http://ulv3.gen21.com. Specific information about the cohort planned for the Santa Clarita Valley will be added soon, and information meetings will be scheduled.
The University Center is a consortium of universities offering advanced degrees under one roof, with the goal of increasing access to higher education by bringing distant degree programs to the residents of the Santa Clarita Valley. The center has operated in an interim facility to meet demand, and a permanent building is planned for the southern-most edge of the College of the Canyons campus.
Other University Center partners include Chapman University; California State University, Bakersfield; California State University, Fresno; California State University, Northridge and ELS Language Centers.
The Interim University Center continues to explore other educational needs within the Santa Clarita Valley and to increase opportunities to higher education.
