KB Home Commits $75,000 to College
Thanks to KB Home, College of the Canyons is another step closer to building its University Center. The nationwide homebuilder announced a $50,000 contribution to establish a construction technology classroom in the new University Center building that is scheduled to begin construction in 2006. In addition, KB Home is contributing $25,000 to the college's athletic programs, bringing its total contribution to College of the Canyons to $75,000.
"KB Home prides itself on being a good corporate citizen and involved in the communities where we build," said Tom DiPrima, president of the LA-Ventura Division of KB Home. "We believe that education is of vital importance, and the new University Center will serve as a hub for learning in the Santa Clarita Valley."
The announcement came at a luncheon held Friday at College of the Canyons to update supporters of the University Center about the project. "This is a tremendous boost to our campaign, and we are pleased to have the support of an outstanding community partner like KB Home," said Dr. Dianne Van Hook, superintendent-president. "Their willingness to step up to the plate will give us the momentum we need to conclude our fund-raising campaign and begin building this much-needed facility."
The University Center is a unique concept that makes education more accessible to local residents. Partnering colleges and universities offer their degree programs on the College of the Canyons campus, giving students an opportunity to pursue higher education beyond the associate degree level without having to commute outside of the Santa Clarita Valley.
The center itself will be located in a 110,000-square-foot building on the south end of the College of the Canyons campus. It will house 8 to 10 partnering institutions and offer upwards of 70 degree programs. The College of the Canyons Foundation is in the final stages of a $10 million capital campaign to help fund construction of the center.
College of the Canyons currently operates an Interim University Center on its campus. Opened in 2002, it offers 30 degrees from seven college and university partners. More than 500 people have graduated from those institutions, earning a variety of undergraduate and graduate degrees, as well as credentials.
