What is Service-Learning?

Service-learning is a teaching and learning strategy that integrates meaningful community service with instruction and reflection to enrich the learning experience, teach civic responsibility, and strengthen communities. As defined by the Chancellor's Office, Service-Learning incorporates the following:

  • Service-Learning links service to the community with academic study.

  • Service-Learning includes structured reflection to integrate study and service.

  • Service-Learning emphasizes working with individuals & groups on needs defined by the community.

  • Service-Learning includes civic responsibility, reflection, and critical thinking as part of the course.

  • Service-Learning also includes clarification of career objectives and acquisition of work-related skills.

We believe students can make valuable contributions to the world as they gain challenging educational experience. We strive to increase community involvement and strengthen leadership skills through direct service, connect community-based work with academic study, and build meaningful relationships between members of the college and the community.
