Volunteer Opportunities |
Interns
work in our courthouse clinics. They work one-on-one with litigants who
need assistance preparing their court forms requesting a domestic
violence restraining order. It usually takes about an hour to
complete a litigant's paperwork. Interns also provide information
about the legal process, shelters, counseling and other social services
available to victim of domestic abuse. All intern work is reviewed
and approved by an attorney.
A DASH
intern must be able to: work well with people (most of the people we assist are under
extreme stress); write clear and concise statements describing the domestic abuse; learn and apply legal rules; and
use
a computer comfortably.

Location |

Pacoima:
Saturdays, 9am - 1pm
Glendale: Tuesday (1st and 3rd) evenings 5pm - 9pm

Volunteer Opportunities |
The
Workers' Rights Center provides a place for low-income workers to come,
free of charge to learn about their rights as workers, and to get help
as they pursue legal claims to wages, unemployment benefits, and
criminal records clean up. The Center provides self-help legal
assistance to workers, through written materials and one-on-one
interviews, helping people to understand their legal rights and analyze
their legal options. Student advocates interview litigants,
calculate their claims, draft demand letters and declarations, and help
litigants prepare for their hearings. If interested, student
advocates can represent litigants at their wage claim or unemployment
benefits appeals hearings. The student will be responsible
for developing factual and legal arguments, writing a brief, preparing
the litigant for the hearing, and developing direct and cross
examination questions.
NLS
attorneys provide training and supervision for students who volunteer at
the Centers.
