Comments We are the only national historic landmark in Ventura County, fifteen miles west of Santa Clarita along highway 126.  If you are a history buff, this is the place for you.  We are in the process of archival of many items related to Old California's Spanish era when much of California was divided by land grants.  The del Valle family and Rubel family influenced the discovery and founding of Ventura County and the Newhall/Castaic area thru cattle, agriculture and oil production.  Rancho Camulos was also made famous by the novel, Ramona, written by legendary author Helen Hunt Jackson about the plight of the American Indian in 1884.

We are a growing museum.  If you are interested in historic preservation, reenactment and docent led tours, we need you.  Join us as we move forward in archiving, planning and preserving this national treasure.

College of the Canyons, Remo, Inc. and every 6th and 7th Grade student in the Santa Clarita Valley will celebrate an innovative partnership to celebrate the importance of the arts.

You are invited to participate in a special “Beat the Odds” training session for COC Service Learning students on September 10th from 9am-1pm at College of the Canyons.

Once trained, you will be invited to teach the fun, hands-on curriculum to local    6th and 7th Grade students. You will be part of a special team of trainers that will help teach all our SCV 6th and 7th Graders how to “Beat the Odds”.

What is Beat the Odds?

Beat the Odds integrates activities from contemporary drum circles and group counseling to facilitate the learning of skills such as focusing and listening, empathy and gratitude, team building, leadership, expressing feelings, and managing anger/stress. It is inclusive, culturally relevant, and does not bear the stigma of therapy.

Beat the Odds is designed for delivery by facilitators who have no musical experience.

Through the “Beat the Odds” program, you will:

§  Train with professional program facilitators from Remo drums, UCLA and COC

§  Learn tools to engage the social, emotional and artistic well-being of children

§  Receive hands-on facilitation experience with local 6th and 7th Graders

§  Join the PAC K12 Arts Education Outreach Initiative

§  Earn valuable professional growth hours as well as Service Learning credit

§  Receive a distinguished certificate of participation

§  Help break a Guiness Book of World’s Records for the largest drum circle

There are two ways you can participate!
