Wildlife Learning Center
Address
16027 Yarnell Street
Sylmar, CA 91342
Organization Description
The Center provides outreach and onsite education in wildlife biology.
The outreach program is the largest in LA with classes taught by
friendly and enthusiastic biologists. Nestled in an old olive grove,
more than 70 different species of rescued and zoo-born wild animals call
this natural environment home.
Volunteer Opportunities
Assist with upkeep, caretaking, and diet preparation for the more than
200 animals. Grounds keeping and docent work also available.
Each volunteer shift is four-hours long and will be broken down into
three hours shadowing one of our staff biologists and one hour of
maintenance and beautification of compound. While shadowing, you will
be assisting in enclosure maintenance, diet preparation, public
interaction, and other general tasks. The hour of beautification and
maintenance will consist of raking, gardening, cleaning, etc.
Volunteers must be available for shifts, during weekdays. Weekends are
not available for service learning volunteers.
Hours of Operation

contact Wildlife for more information
We require volunteers to wear closed-toes
shoes and clothes that you can get dirty in, as we will work and be
cleaning in and around the animals enclosures. We also ask that any
tattoos are covered and facial piercings removed during your shift. For
your own convenience, please pull long hair back. We will require an
in-person interview prior to starting your service learning hours. We
understand that circumstances can change quickly, and if you need to
miss a shift, please call us in advance to reschedule. Unexcused
absences are not permitted. Please approach this service project with
the same attitude and enthusiasm you would offer a “real” job. We are a
very family-oriented, friendly facility and ask that our volunteers
maintain cheerful demeanors while on site. If you do not like animals,
children, or the smell of Simple Green, please do not apply. After
successfully completing your service-learning project, our staff would
be happy to write you a letter of recommendation.

leading curriculum supplement activities.
