Introduction

My name is Nick. I will be your instructor for Auto Tech - 112 - Engine Fundamentals for Technicians. I am a Shop Foreman at a local shop and have decided to give back to other people looking into becoming automotive technicians. I look forward to meeting you all online as well as potentially in person!

Course Description

You will have Modules each week. Each module will walk you through the weeks information using the following;

  1. Virtual component activities and questions. You will be able to see the component on the left of the screen while reading or listening to the information presented on the right of the screen. A video on how this program works can be found Here. You will answer question about the component or subject to move on to the next page. Each attempt at the question is logged so we can see if you are just clicking through all the answers till you find the right one.
  2. Short videos on the weekly topics, followed by a few questions to gauge understanding.
  3. Module quizzes. A quiz will be at the end of each section to help you identify area you excel in and areas you may need a little more help in
  4. There will be discussions throughout the semester. These will relate to symptom diagnostics and advising on tests procedures and repair. Participation is required.

What to Expect in this Course

This class will be a fast paced course with a lot of information in a very short (5 week) amount of time. Please be sure to log into canvas at least weekly to view the assignments. Sometimes things may change around based the class' progression.

Types of Assessments

Students should expect weekly quizzes and discussion boards. There will be a final exam on the last week of class as well. This test will be mostly with ASE style questions to better prepare you for ASE testing.

Textbook Information

There is no textbook requirement for this class.

Other Relevant Course Information

To access this course, you will need either a phone, computer or access to the library or TLC lab for computers. The device must have internet access.  

The TLC lab is a great resource to help you with learning how to use a computer, accessing your courses and even provide tutoring if you would like additional support.

Canvas

This course can be accessed on the first day of class via Canvas at https://coc.instructure.com. Log into Canvas using your CanyonsID single sign-on:

Online Counseling

The Counseling Department offers appointments online. You can schedule an appointment by visiting the Online Counseling website. Counselors can help you map out a plan to reach your educational goals as well as advise you on course selection and registration.

Management of Stress and Mental Health

Often the pressure on our students is very strong, involving academic commitments, relationships, outside jobs and family pressure to name a few. The staff and faculty of College of the Canyons are here to see you succeed academically and care about your emotional and physical health. You can learn more about the broad range of confidential student services, including counseling and mental health services available on campus by visiting the Student Health & Wellness Center in the Student Services Building (across from the bookstore). The phone number is 661-362-3259 that you can call 24/7. You can also e mail for an appointment at StudentHealthCenter@canyons.edu. At the Canyon Country Campus the Health Center will be in the new Student Services Building.

Also, the National Suicide & Crisis Lifeline number is now 988. All students at COC are encouraged to enter that phone number in their cells. You can call it when you, or someone you know, is having thoughts of suicide or is in severe distress.

You can also now use the Crisis Text Line: Just text "Courage" to 741741. Someone will get back to you immediately. Its free, 24/7, and confidential.

Veterans Resource Center

The College of the Canyons Veterans Resource Center is a department within the Student Services Division at the college, created to help veterans and veteran dependents with applying to College of the Canyons, enrolling in classes, and requesting VA Education or Vocational Benefits.
