Introduction
Welcome to Chem 201! This course is the first semester of the two-semester general chemistry class. It is an accelerated summer course so learning materials will be covered at twice the speed of a regular 16-week course! Chemistry is typically a challenging course for most students and this course requires extra effort from everyone to stay on track. I will provide the organization and you will bring diligence to be prepared for class meetings, labs, and to complete homework assignments.
Course Description
This course is the first semester of the UC-CSU transferable general chemistry sequence. It is designed to provide a foundation in the basic principles of the molecular nature of matter and its change, including reaction chemistry and theoretical aspects of matter and energy, introduce gravimetric, volumetric and spectroscopic analysis techniques in the laboratory, and provide the prerequisite information required for Chem 202. (Prerequisite: MATH-070 or higher math placement [recommended]; CHEM-151 or COC Chemistry Placement Exam)
What to Expect in this Course
All class meetings and labs are required in-person attendance. The learning materials include lectures, Aktiv Learning online homework assignments, Discussion/recitation worksheets, in-class quizzes, labs and exams. Lectures will be in-person with PowerPoints posted on Canvas. The homework assignments will be posted on Aktiv online learning platform (instructions to sign up will be provided separately on the first day of class). Discussion worksheets will be assigned for each chapter and will be posted on Canvas. Quizzes will be given during lecture. Exams will be administered during recitation.. Depending on your previous knowledge of chemistry, you will need to spend between 15 to 30 hours a week to attend the lectures, lab, study, and complete all the lab and homework assignments.
Types of Assessments
Graded work includes online problem sets, lab reports, a lab practical, discussion worksheets, quizzes and exams. Online problem sets are assigned through Aktiv online learning platform. Lab reports include pre-lab questions and post-lab analysis. Discussion worksheets are collaborative and started during recitation each week. Quizzes will be both online and in-person. All exams will be in-person.

Other Relevant Course Information
Remember, if you are registered for this class you must show up on the first day or you will be automatically dropped from the class, and your seat given to a student on the waitlist.
If you are on the waitlist, you will only be able to add the course if a student that is currently registered drops - either sometime between now and the start of the semester (in which case, the system will automatically move students up the waitlist and into the course) or by not attending on the first day. I have no control over the order of the waitlist. Whatever your position is at the time you registered is how far down you are; I cannot make any adjustments or add out-of-order. You are highly encouraged to attend the first day of lecture if you are the on waitlist, to make sure you don't miss any important information.

Often the pressure on our students is very strong, involving academic commitments, relationships, outside jobs and family pressure to name a few. The staff and faculty of College of the Canyons are here to see you succeed academically and care about your emotional and physical health. At the Canyon Country Campus the Health Center will be in the new Student Services Building.
Also, the National Suicide & Crisis Lifeline number is now 988. All students at COC are encouraged to enter that phone number in their cells. You can call it when you, or someone you know, is having thoughts of suicide or is in severe distress.

Veterans Resource Center
