Introduction
Hi! Welcome to NC.CGSL 004 Career Exploration! I am so happy that you are considering taking this course. This class will provide a personally rewarding journey through the career exploration process and a better understanding of yourself. I have over a decade of experience in community college counseling (career, personal, educational) and teaching career exploration and college success skills courses. I love helping my students discover their passions and prepare for their future. I look forward to guiding you through this process this semester and I am here to support you along your journey!
Our course is OnlineLive, with all our scheduled meetings taking place in Zoom! There are no in-person meetings for our class.
Course Description
This course provides students with career exploration techniques. Emphasis is placed on selecting a career based on self-examination of interests, values, abilities, and personality through assessment inventories, skill exercises, and career research.
This non-credit course is non-transferable to a university and can be repeated up to ten times. This class is offered on a Pass (P)/No-Pass(NP) grading basis.
What to Expect in this Course
We will be using Canvas and Zoom as our online classroom. Be sure to complete the Canvas Orientation Module in our course to help you familiarize yourself with these online learning tools.
Our course will become available in Canvas on the first day of our course.
You will be expected to log into Canvas throughout each week in order to keep up with coursework. All coursework has listed deadlines. We will meet twice a week for 1.5 hours each class session. You should plan to dedicate an additional 3-6 hours per week dedicated to this course.
We will have in-class activities, discussions, quizzes, and homework assignments.
To participate in this class, you must have access to a computer, internet services, and a webcam. We will be utilizing photo/video devices and/or online audio devices so that you can post recordings, videos, and/or photos as part of your assignments when needed. All communication is through Canvas, announcements and discussion boards, email, and our OnlineLive Zoom class sessions.

Types of Assessments
You can expect to complete in-class assignments, discussion posts, career self-assessment reflections, online quizzes, homework assignments, and projects in this course.
Textbook Information
No Textbook is required for our course. All learning materials will be available in Canvas free of charge.

3. Brainstorm possible career choices based on assessment results and exploration

First Day of Class:
You will be required to attend the first class session (OnlineLive in Zoom) and complete an in-class assignment to introduce yourself to the class. Failure to attend without letting me know in advance will result in being dropped from the course.
**If you are on the “waitlist” and are still interested in adding the class, please email me on the first day of class. If space is available, I will give you an add code to register for the course. I am unable to add you to the course before the first day of class. Because this course is accelerated, I cannot add students after the add/drop deadline regardless if you were on the waitlist.

The Counseling Department offers appointments online. You can schedule an appointment by visiting the Online Counseling website. Counselors can help you map out a plan to reach your educational goals as well as advise you on course selection and registration.
Management of Stress and Mental Health
Often the pressure on our students is very strong, involving academic commitments, relationships, outside jobs and family pressure to name a few. The staff and faculty of College of the Canyons are here to see you succeed academically and care about your emotional and physical health. You can learn more about the broad range of confidential student services, including counseling and mental health services available on campus by visiting the Student Health & Wellness Center in the Student Services Building (across from the bookstore). The phone number is 661-362-3259 that you can call 24/7. You can also e mail for an appointment at StudentHealthCenter@canyons.edu. At the Canyon Country Campus the Health Center will be in the new Student Services Building.
Also, the National Suicide & Crisis Lifeline number is now 988. All students at COC are encouraged to enter that phone number in their cells. You can call it when you, or someone you know, is having thoughts of suicide or is in severe distress.
You can also now use the Crisis Text Line: Just text "Courage" to 741741. Someone will get back to you immediately. Its free, 24/7, and confidential.
Veterans Resource Center
The College of the Canyons Veterans Resource Center is a department within the Student Services Division at the college, created to help veterans and veteran dependents with applying to College of the Canyons, enrolling in classes, and requesting VA Education or Vocational Benefits.
