Traveling with Canvas to Improve Student Equity - Presented by Michael Smedshammer, Instructional Design Coordinator, Modesto Jr. College
Gaps between online and on-campus retention and success tend to be wider when we look at disadvantaged socio-economic groups. Unfortunately, research primarily targets on-campus strategies for improving retention and success as they relate to student equity. Modern LMS’s now offer easy-to-use tools for applying some of what research tells us about helping disadvantaged students become more successful. This session will highlight the top five ways of using a learning management system to improve retention and success, particularly among students from disadvantaged groups.

Why attend an on ground class if the professor mostly lectures or shows lectures (“Time now for another TED talk, class!” Heavy sigh from students.) If online can do something better, let it.  The hybrid format opens doors to opportunities for new and improved on ground activities. The focus is more about scaffolding and integrating the two learning arenas than it is about Flipping them.
