Answers to frequently asked questions

  • What is Sustainable Architecture?

    A.  The wide range of crises being experienced worldwide and locally due to the effects of climate change and global warming are well understood scientifically; yet the impacts of these crises on the built environment remain largely unaddressed in regard to the resiliency and sustainability of our communities and the built environment in which we reside. Sustainable Architecture is an important means for addressing these challenges by guiding the planning, design, and construction of the built environment to meet the objectives and performance targets necessary to achieve resiliency and sustainability. What skills are used in this career field?

    A.   Practicing Sustainable Architecture requires a multidisciplinary understanding of the challenges being confronted in order to provide a resilient built environment in response to the effects of global warming and climate change. The BASA Program Learning Outcomes allow students to acquire knowledge and develop multidisciplinary analytical, problem solving, and graphic communication skills in the following learning areas:

    • Examine the effects of environmental factors and resource consumption on building and site design using a variety of analysis and simulation methodologies;
    • Evaluate and apply resilient/sustainable building design principles to the design, documentation, code compliance, and presentation of architectural building projects;
    • Analyze the use and effectiveness of passive and active environmental control systems and resource conservation strategies to achieve resilient/sustainable building design;
    • Develop architectural designs using advanced Building Energy Modeling (BEM) and Building Information Modeling (BIM) techniques for implementation in residential and non-residential building projects with Integrative Process methodologies to achieve code compliance and sustainable rating system certification; and
    • Apply professional practice knowledge and skills during required Project Based Learning internship to demonstrate technician employment readiness for the A/E/C industry.
