Online Hybrid Instructor Recertification

College of the Canyons online & hybrid Instructors will refresh their Online Instructor Qualifications every three years by completing a self-paced online training (approx. two hours), which includes updates on technology, regulations, accreditation requirements, best practices, and resources. 

Refresh Course Frequently Asked Questions

  • Instructors will have their entire cohort (academic year timeline) to complete the self-paced course.
  • The (two hour) self-paced Canvas course covers updates on technology, new legal & accreditation requirements, best practices, and reminders. Instructors whose three-year cycle falls into the next cohort will receive an email from Online Education informing them about the next refresh cycle. IT will send out the Canvas course invitations. 

    E.g. New Title V requirements for student to student contact, new technologies like Proctorio for online assessments, OEI Rubric, and COC’s online checklist.

  • The instructor’s online/hybrid certificate will become inactive until the refresh course is completed. Instructors with inactive status for their certification should not be scheduled to teach online or hybrid classes.

  • The original online/hybrid certification date will not be affected. The instructor’s new refresh date will be updated to three years from the date of refresh completion.

    • E.g.: An instructor’s certificate expires November 10th, 2019.
      • The instructor completes the refresh course on July 15th, 2019.
      • They will have a new refresh date three years in the future, or July 15th, 2022. 
      • The instructor’s new refresh date will be updated to three years from the date of refresh completion.

  • Yes, instructors who complete the course will be awarded two hours of FLEX.
