Hi Everyone!
Welcome to Fundamentals of Public Speaking, COMS 105. My name is Asya Mazurova, and I will be your instructor. Please read this entire letter, and if you have any further questions, please email me at asya.mazurova@canyons.edu. I will do my best to reply to you within 24-48 hours.
This course was designed to help you develop a variety of communication skills and provide you with an opportunity to practice public speaking in a supportive environment. The Student Learning Outcomes for this course are to Organize and deliver effective informative and persuasive speeches applying the principles of public speaking, Utilize effective research skills using traditional and electronic resources, and Analyze public discourse.

Although this is an 100% online class - YOU WILL BE GIVING SPEECHES IN THIS COURSE LIVE! We will have a signup sheet for speaking dates and use online tools (Zoom) to deliver live speeches to myself and your classmates. This translates to several online meetings.
This class is an online course! We will not have mandatory face-to-face weekly class meetings, but we will have online meeting times for speeches only! During the first couple of weeks of classes, you will sign up to give your speeches and be an audience member on one of the date/time slots available. You will know these dates in advance, so I expect you to work your personal lives around the dates you choose to give your speech.
What to Expect in this Course
It is important to understand this is an online class! All of the class work will be done online! Please note, this class will require you to work online and complete assignments using different forms of technology, so please understand the following:
- We will be using different online tools, be prepared to do so. If you dont know how to do something, I will help you as much as I can. Google will help with the rest!
- This is a university level class! This means you will have work to do which reflects college rigor. The level of work doesnt change if you take this class face-to-face, hybrid or 100% online.
- The California State University System feels that this class is so important that students must take it prior to being eligible to transfer AND you must receive a minimum grade of a C. This class will not be difficult as long as you listen to your instructor, complete the assignments on time and take this class seriously. I can't take away speech anxiety, but I can help make the process easier! I have helped thousands of students get through this class - I want to make sure your name is added to the list. You will need to trust me through this process. I KNOW most of you are taking this class because you feel like you have to rather than want to :-)

We use an Open Educational Resource (OER) textbook in the course, which means it is free for you. You can find it in Module 1 of our class Canvas shell.
Other Relevant Course Information
Please note - you must complete the first week assignments to stay enrolled in the course! Students will be expected to complete required discussion board questions each week to maintain enrollment within this class!
As soon as you gain access to the class, please go into Module 1 and review all documents; first, and foremost, the syllabus.
In order to be successful in this course you must have reliable access to the Internet, a web browser, word processing program, camera and microphone.
