Leading from the Middle Update

  • The Leading from the Middle (LFM) team of five attended their final three-day convening at Cal Poly Pomona to explore change leadership, learn about the Guided Pathways projects and progress of 12 other California Community Colleges, and work on a plan to help lead Guided Pathways efforts. The LFM team consists of:
    • Paul Wickline, Associate Vice President, Educational Pathways
    • Erika Torgeson, Counseling faculty, Guided Pathways Faculty Liaison

    • Team Collaboration and Leadership; and
    • Leadership in the Context of a College Initiative
  • During the year-long experience the team identified the need to improve communication about the organization and operation of the Canyons Completes efforts. The team developed an organizational chart showing how Canyons Completes operates, which is now in its 9th version. This is a living document and will be updated as needed.

    Leading from the Middle

    • The Leading from the Middle team of five attended a three day convening at Cal Poly Pomona to explore change leadership, learn about the guided pathways projects and progress of 12 other California community colleges, and work on a plan to help lead Guided Pathways efforts.
      • Paul Wickline, Interim Associate Vice President, Educational Pathways

      • Debbie Small, A & R Administrative Assistant, Classified Professional Development Committee Lead
    • This is a yearlong, statewide academy that focuses on leadership and developing a culture of inquiry within the framework of Guided Pathways. The academy will consist of three in-person meetings and year-round coaching and peer support for each college team. Outcomes are clustered in three major categories:
      • Leadership Development
      • Team Collaboration and Leadership
      • Leadership in the Context of a College Initiative

    Guided Pathways Steering Committee

    • The Guided Pathways Steering Committee meets monthly to discuss the status of current projects. The team met on March 20th and talked about strategies for creating effective academic pathways for students and integrating these pathways into the website redesign.

    LEAP Pathways

    • Mark Perna, motivational speaker and author of “Answering the Why”, presented an engaging session with the LEAP members on Friday, March 15 on effectively reaching the younger generations and shared some draft Career Trees developed by College of the Canyons faculty. Earlier in the day he met with department chairs as part of the Instructional Advisory Council meeting. Friday’s time with Mark Perna is one part of the college’s multi-part engagement with Mark to develop Career Trees and program copy points to help students explore and identify their education and career paths.

    Gathering Student Voices

    • At the March 15th LEAP session we had an opportunity to gather more feedback from students regarding how they got connected at College of the Canyons, who has helped them along their path, things that were not helpful that could be improved and get input on the work the Solution Teams are doing. Highlights from the student comments included:
      • Helpful Resources

        • First-Year Promise (FYP), My Academic Plan (MAP), Counseling, Canvas, Athletics, and TLC.
      • Helpful Faculty/Staff

        • Counseling faculty through Counseling courses, including career exploration, and the FYP faculty
      • Areas for Improvement

        • Campus maps (currently many are faded), building signage (outside and inside), access to counselors. One specific comment about signage on buildings was that Hasley Hall says “North Commons” on the outside of the building which is confusing to students.
      • Suggestions for LEAP Solution Teams

        • Success Teams need to ensure that they oversee a manageable number of students so that students can easily get help when needed.
        • The multicultural center being proposed through the Equity-Minded Practitioners team should consider naming it something that invites students into a gathering space like the “Melting Pot” and serve coffee. The students also suggested that the center should include art and other décor that reflects multicultural traditions but suggested it being promoted as a gathering space for students to connect.
  • Leading from the Middle

    • A cross-functional team attended the first of three sessions as part of a year-long training through the RP Group’s Leading from the Middle Academy to advance the college’s efforts on Canyons Completes (Guided Pathways). Among many goals for the team at the first convening (March 14-16) was to:
      • Develop a collective understanding of what it means to be change agents.
      • Learn ways to effectively reframe the Guided Pathways messages in a more receptive and engaging way.
      • Identify strategies for helping folks move from an external to internal motivation for doing the work of Guided Pathways.
      • Identify strategies for expanding the folks in the "middle" to help lead the Guided Pathways work from wherever they operate within the organizational structure.

  • Student Success Begins in the Classroom

    • The Spring 2019 Convocation included many breakout sessions focused on supporting student success in the classroom and started with a student panel. The word cloud below illustrates some of the things students said helped them be successful, including things like feeling connected, participating in classes and experiences that are interactive, getting help from faculty and staff (e.g., advisors and special programs like EOPS, MESA and Athletics).

  • Work-Based Learning

    • Experiential/work-based learning and the ability to articulate learning outcomes is essential for graduating students. At a recent administrative retreat, panelists from local businesses underscored the importance of “real world” experience and the ability for students to be able to articulate and demonstrate their learning by saying certificates are “value add”, students need a portfolio to show their work, the certificate needs to be accompanied with evidence of what they student learned and real world experience needs to accompany the piece of paper.

    California Guided Pathways Institute 5

    • A team is headed to Institute 5 of 6 for the California Guided Pathways Demonstration Project this week. This institute will focus on Ensuring Students are Learning and Progressing Along the Pathway. The team headed to the Institute includes Nicole Faudree (Student Learning Outcomes Co-Coordinator), Tara Williams and Erika Torgeson (Guided Pathways Faculty Liaisons), Paul Wickline (Interim Assoc.
