Introduction

Hello students – welcome to BIOSCI-100-73300.  I am Julie Nguyen, your General Biology Professor for the Hybrid Winter 2024 section.  We are going to be working together for the next five intensive weeks to learn the general world of biology and the nature of science.  We will be 100% Online for the lectures and 100% face-to-face for the lab activities.  I hope you are as excited as I am to jump start the course next year starting on Tuesday January 02, 2024.  I know your goal is to complete this class with, of course with a good grade.  My goal, as your instructor, is to lead and provide you all with a concrete fundamental concept of biological sciences, so that you can use it to your everyday life, work, and future endeavor.  Let’s work and support each other together to make our goal a success!

Course Description

Explores the structure, function and development of living systems from cells to ecosystems.
No credit for BIOSCI-100 if taken after BIOSCI-106, 107, 107, 201, 202, 204, 205, 115, 116, or 221.

Lecture Student Learning Outcome:
Characterize the nature of science and scientific inquiry, and describe and analyze biological concepts from cells to ecosystems on a basic level.

Laboratory Student Learning Outcome:
Evaluate and analyze data and observations based on standard methods of scientific inquiry.

What to Expect in this Course

1.   The lecture portion of course is divided into two, with half delivered online in Canvas modules and the other half delivered through in-person activities during the first hour of our laboratory meetings on campus.  The reason is because most if not all of your lab activities are aligned with the lecture learning modules.  All lecture materials will be presented in an asynchronous online format.

2.   We will meet T, W, & Th for the next five weeks on campus.  The lab attendance is mandatory – especially the first day of class.  Attendance is required per college policy, which states, “Any student absent for any reason for more than 10% of the class meetings may be dropped by the instructor prior to 75% of the course.”  Consistent and regular “attendance” is vital in order to keep up with the course’s fast and intensive 5-week pace.  If you miss two days’ worth of lab course work without contacting me with justification, you will be dropped from the course for “non-attendance.”
Students are expected to read ahead each assigned lab activity prior coming to class.  In order to earn a good part of the course final grade, students are required to bring to class the lab manual to complete each assigned lab activity accordingly.
If you are in need of special accommodations, you should register with the office of AAC (Academic Accommodation Center) at COC at the beginning of the semester.  Student needs to provide an official accommodation letter to the instructor in order to ensure that the needs during the course are met (refer to Additional Resources / AAC section below.)

Types of Assessments

Types of Assessments:

Lecture exams, lab midterms and final exams will be administered in person during the designated lab meeting times. There will also be pre-lab quizzes given online and post-lab quizzes in person at the beginning of each lab period. Additional online assessments and discussion board assignments will be assigned accordingly.
