Welcome to BIO 107!!

My name is Dr Cude (it’s like dude with a “C”) and I’m excited that we are going to spend the semester together learning about how life works at the molecular level. I first became fascinated by cells and molecular biology when I realized that our bodies are made up of 100,000,000,000,000 independent cells, each considered “life” in their own right. These independent living cells come together and through an elaborate system of communication and gene regulation coordinate everything that we experience as a human from hunger and headaches, to jealousy and love.

Course Description

Cells are the foundational unit of all living things. This course introduces the principles of cellular form and function including: bioenergetics and metabolism, genetics and gene regulation, cellular anatomy and physiology, and modern molecular biology techniques used in disease detection, forensics (crime scene analysis), and biotechnology.  We will cover 18 chapters of lecture material and 13 different labs, which provide a practical application to re-enforce material learned in lecture.  Each week we will cover the equivalent of 6 hours of face to face content: 3 hours lecture and 3 hours lab. All content is 100% online.

What to Expect in this Course

This is a majors biology course and consistent, active participation is required to be successful. Logging onto Canvas a minimum of three times a week will be necessary to complete theassigned tasks.  All lectures are provided asynchronously as pre-recorded videos. I will post three hours worth of lecture videos per week (matching the face to face time for weekly lectures). Labs will be a combination of synchronous (Online LIVE) and asynchronous (complete online at your own pace) activities. Lab reports and lab quizzes will be due weekly according to the class syllabus/schedule.  Each week we will cover the equivalent of 6 hours of face to face content: 3 hours lecture and 3 hours lab. The schedule of a typical A sample week includes:

  • LAB Report (due on your lab day)-requires 3 hours to complete
  • LAB Quiz (open Tues-Thurs)-requires 30 minutes to complete
  • LECTURE Videos-requires 3 hours to watch & answer assigned problems

All lectures are provided asynchronously (Online) as pre-recorded videos posted to weekly modules. I will post three hours worth of lecture videos per week (matching the face to face time for weekly lectures). All labs are posted as self-guided activities, including instructions, data sets, and videos to be analyzed and completed by students and submitted as a lab report each week (matching face to face time, labs are expected to take approximately 3 hrs to complete)

Lecture videos and activities, discussion boards, lab reports, and study guides will be posted to the course Canvas site.

Types of Assessments

Weekly lab reports (file uploads), weekly online lab quizzes, 2 discussion board posts/replies, 4 online lecture exams, 1 online cumulative lab final.

PLEASE TAKE NOTE:

  • All exams and quizzes are given via Canvas Assessment software, which requires the use of the CHROME internet browser.
  • Exams and quizzes CANNOT be taken using a handheld mobile device/phone
  • I do NOT require the use of Proctorio or WebCam during exams/assessments
