Course Description

In this course you will learn the importance of the key components of business in today’s business world. This business foundations course is designed to introduce the student to the complex world of business by means of a survey of the principles and skills that apply to business. Through case analysis, business article discussions, presentations, and computerized research, the students will come to understand primary business principles. Key areas of emphasis include the following: cultivating a business, domestic and global business environments, management, human resources, marketing processes, information systems, ethics and sustainability, accounting and financial issues.

As a beginning course in business administration, this course has the potential to become a decisive factor in determining, for many students, a career choice. As such, the principle course objective is to expose the students to a broad-based look at the business world -- locally, nationally, and internationally. This includes analyzing business case studies, as well as examining current business events and the business people who make these events happen. In this process, the students will learn to carefully assess business issues and develop critical thinking skills. Upon successful completion of this course, students will have developed the basic skills needed to: 1) become aware of various fields of business specialization; 2) critically analyze a business case; 3) use the Web to facilitate business discussion; and 4) acquire insight into global, ethical, and sustainability issues in business today.
