Introduction

My name is Janet English, and I will be your guide for this learning experience called online education. I have been with College of the Canyons for twenty years. I look forward to getting to know each of you throughout the semester.

In this day and age, we are fortunate to be able to offer online education courses in order to accommodate so many of you who may not have the time or resources to attend classes on campus due to modern societal pressures, including professional obligations, familial responsibilities, and financial or health concerns. It should not, however, be assumed that an online education class is in any way easier than an on-campus class. In fact, just the opposite may be true since, to be successful, students in online classes must rely more on their own resourcefulness, discipline, good time management and study habits, as well as finding within themselves the means to remain motivated. Although this course is taught entirely online with no campus attendance requirement, my hope is to get to know each of you the same as if we interacted face-to-face in a classroom.

Course Description

This course introduces students to desktop publishing using Adobe InDesign to create graphically-rich layouts, brochures, posters, fliers, and newsletters.

Students will work on a variety of activities differentiating the features of Adobe InDesign’s tools and assess their application to various techniques studied required to create graphic-intensive publications for distribution and high-end printing that address typical layout and design problems encountered in the area of cross-media publishing relative to the modern business environment.

While this course will be administered 100% online, including all quizzes, there will be one non mandatory open lab Zoom scheduled per week where students may get help with their assignments. One-on-One Zoom Meetings may also be available, by appointment. A recording of lectures for each chapter and several recordings of a Final Project example will be provided on Canvas for students to review.

All student assignments and quizzes will be submitted on Canvas using the assignment and quiz links provided in modules on Canvas.

This course requires proficiency with the operating system of your computer, computer file management, the Internet, a browser (Google Chrome), and the ability to send e-mail.

Textbook Information

Adobe® InDesign Creative Cloud Revealed, 2nd Edition

You cannot take this class without obtaining the book. The textbook is required for this course. This book will be available in the Campus Bookstore.

Physical Book: Adobe® InDesign Creative Cloud Revealed, 2nd Edition

Author: Chris Botello

ISBN: 9780357541760

Students can also buy or rent the physical book from the Cengage website. (This link is directly to the book)

As another option, if students have purchased Cengage Unlimited for another course, they will be able to rent the physical book for this course through the same account.

I do not recommend using an e-book version of this text, unless you have multiple screens. The program we will be using, InDesign, is quite large and requires a lot of the computer’s resources to run. In addition, using a split screen with this program will not work well.
