My name is Claudenice McCalister and I am here to help you to be successful in this course. I am here to support you in your learning goals and needs. Please contact me with any questions, concerns, or just to chat.

This course is 100% Online - Asynchronous. What does it mean? - It means that we will not have any live or in-person instruction. However, I will be in constant contact with you offering feedback on your assignments, answering to your questions, and meeting you during the office hours if you want to meet me to discuss any questions, issues, or concerns that you may have. The Zoom Meeting information for the office hours will be shared through Canvas, our Learning Management System (LMS). 

This course is not difficult. However, it involves a lot of reading, watching videos, and interpreting what you read or watch. It means that you need to have some time assigned to perform those activities on top of doing your varied assignments.  

I use a lot of online resources in this course. To take this online course, it is fundamental that you know basic computer skills, such as browsing the internet, using word editors, uploading pictures, etc.

Course Description

This course introduces the function, responsibilities, authority, and technical requirements of quality assurance of construction projects using California’s building codes as a basis.

At the end of this course, you will be able to apply knowledge of codes, regulations, standards to a construction project, and to:

  1. Evaluate how California's building codes affect construction through regulatory processes.
  2. Assess how quality assurance and quality control is achieved and addressed through the design process, construction documents, and inspections.
  3. Explain the duties and responsibilities of the building inspector and how to manage the inspection process and choose appropriate methods of keeping related records and documentation.
  4. Apply the knowledge of the various codes and effectively communicate project errors, omissions, and deficiencies to achieve optimum quality control.
  5. Explain inspector career development.

What to Expect in this Course

To ensure that you are learning the relevant content and core concepts of this course, you will be exposed to different types of assignments on a weekly basis. 

You will need to interact with other students in discussion boards on Canvas, upload pictures, record videos/audios, etc. Therefore, you will need to have access to a webcam, microphone, internet connection, and a phone and/or computer to access the content of the course.

Types of Assessments

In this course you will have different types of assignments that will be assessing/ensuring your retention of important content and core concepts. The different types of assignments include but are not limited to online research, discussion boards, quizzes, exams, multiple choice homework assignments, essay assignments, reflections, surveys, micro projects, etc. 

Textbook Information

No textbook is necessary in this course. I will provide all material necessary for you to thrive in this course.

And the third component is your dedication to strive and meet the deadlines of your assignments and exams.

This course can be accessed on the first day of class via Canvas at https://coc.instructure.com. Log into Canvas using your CanyonsID single sign-on:

The Counseling Department offers appointments online. You can schedule an appointment by visiting the Online Counseling website. Counselors can help you map out a plan to reach your educational goals as well as advise you on course selection and registration.

Management of Stress and Mental Health

Often the pressure on our students is very strong, involving academic commitments, relationships, outside jobs and family pressure to name a few. The staff and faculty of College of the Canyons are here to see you succeed academically and care about your emotional and physical health. You can learn more about the broad range of confidential student services, including counseling and mental health services available on campus by visiting the Student Health & Wellness Center in the Student Services Building (across from the bookstore). The phone number is 661-362-3259 that you can call 24/7. You can also e mail for an appointment at StudentHealthCenter@canyons.edu. At the Canyon Country Campus the Health Center will be in the new Student Services Building.

Also, the National Suicide & Crisis Lifeline number is now 988. All students at COC are encouraged to enter that phone number in their cells. You can call it when you, or someone you know, is having thoughts of suicide or is in severe distress.

You can also now use the Crisis Text Line: Just text "Courage" to 741741. Someone will get back to you immediately. Its free, 24/7, and confidential.

Veterans Resource Center

The College of the Canyons Veterans Resource Center is a department within the Student Services Division at the college, created to help veterans and veteran dependents with applying to College of the Canyons, enrolling in classes, and requesting VA Education or Vocational Benefits.
