Introduction

metro - arts et métiers (creative commons)

Welcome! My name is Prof. Omar El, and I’m honored to facilitate your French language learning adventure this Summer.

I am an LA native, a first-gen student; after transferring from Santa Monica College, I earned a B.A. in Anthropology at UC Berkeley and an M.A. in French Studies at The University of Wisconsin, Madison. I spent an academic year in Ardèche, France, teaching English at a public school as an Assistant de langue through the TAPIF program (Teaching Assistant Program in France). My academic interests include film studies, diasporas and transnational communities, colonialism, and post-coloniality. I enjoy composing fragrances as a hobby. My favorite ice cream is mint chip.

This is an introductory French course that does not require any previous knowledge. This course will focus on pronunciation, speaking, reading, and writing; we will also be introduced to Francophone cultures. This course corresponds to the first year of high school French. This course is taught in French.

Course Description

In French 101, beyond the core grammatical notions, we’ll explore everything from French café culture, French music (from Edith Piaf to Daft Punk), French style, cinema, and cultural differences, and discover the multitude of peoples and histories through postcolonial Francophone studies.

What to Expect in this Course

You will participate with your classmates and instructor during live lectures in person and in your online classroom (Canvas + MindTap).

I will initiate regular and substantive contact with students throughout the term through scheduled in-person class meetings, tools in Canvas, regular office hours, etc.

You will be busy. You will be expected to put in at least five hours + per week working on French through Canvas + MindTap, and in class. This is all in addition to homework.

You will be assigned various activities: discussions, short readings, poems, songs, YouTube videos, and films.

You will need a desktop computer, laptop, or tablet with a microphone and camera and reliable access to the Internet. This is a must! Please let me know if you have any problems meeting this requirement. COC believes in access for all and has implemented measures to help you meet this requirement.

We’ll have fun too!
