Introduction

 Welcome to Math 104 Precalculus course!

My name is Iveta Tonerayn, and I will be your instructor for this course. This orientation letter will provide you with helpful information as you prepare for our class.

There will be both synchronous Zoom meetings during scheduled class days/hours and in-person exam days in the schedule.

Course Description

This course is designed to develop skills to analyzes equations, inequalities, liner, quadratic, radical, rational, exponential and logarithmic functions, systems of equations, conic sections, zeros of polynomial equations and additional topics in preparation for calculus.  

MATH 104 STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES

Graph polynomial, rational, logarithmic, exponential, and trigonometric functions and solve equations involving these functions.

What to Expect in this Course

The textbook for this course is: Webassign access code for Precalculus by Cohen, Lee, and Sklar (7th ed.)

A hard copy of the textbook is not required. The only required material is Webassign student access code and your COC email account. You can either purchase the access code online through COC Bookstore or from Cengage’s website on the first day of the semester when you login to Canvas.

To organize our course materials and assignments, we will use Canvas. The detailed instructions will be under Modules tab.You will need to have access to Canvas to take the course. Through Canvas, you will be able to upload/submit all assignments you are assigned. Furthermore, through Canvas you will be able to access all the lecture notes that I will be going over in class.

You must attend class meetings via Zoom as in schedule.

  • A computer (laptop or desktop computer, with a webcam, a microphone, and speakers);                                        
  • A reliable connection to the internet to join confer-zoom lectures;
  • A secondary device that you will use to scan your hand-written work;      

Types of Assessments

You will have 

  • In-Person Exams (in campus). Pease check dates in the class schedule.
  •  Classwork during ZOOM session.
  • In-Person Final Exam (in campus). Please check dates in the class schedule.
  • Online homework via WebAssign.

Management of Stress and Mental Health

Often the pressure on our students is very strong, involving academic commitments, relationships, outside jobs and family pressure to name a few. The staff and faculty of College of the Canyons are here to see you succeed academically and care about your emotional and physical health. You can learn more about the broad range of confidential student services, including counseling and mental health services available on campus by visiting the Student Health & Wellness Center in the Student Services Building (across from the bookstore). At the Canyon Country Campus the Health Center will be in the new Student Services Building.

Also, the National Suicide & Crisis Lifeline number is now 988. All students at COC are encouraged to enter that phone number in their cells. You can call it when you, or someone you know, is having thoughts of suicide or is in severe distress.

You can also now use the Crisis Text Line: Just text "Courage" to 741741. Someone will get back to you immediately. Its free, 24/7, and confidential.

Veterans Resource Center
