  • 16 Week

Introduction

I am Professor Rupa Sinha. I will teach this "Introductory Statistics" course. This course is different from the regular math course. In this course, you will not solve problems; we will not focus on calculations too much; rather, we will focus on conceptual knowledge, analysis, and interpretation. You will get to know more when you come to the class on day one.

Course Description

This class is a hybrid. Hybrid means we will meet once a week in person.

  • If you are enrolled in section 75293: We will meet in Mentry Hall, room 334, at the Valencia campus every Tuesday. The time will be 2:25 to 4:50 p.m.
  • If you are enrolled in section 75288: We will meet in Mentry Hall, room 334, at the Valencia campus every Tuesday. The time will be 5:00 to 7:25 pm.

We will cover what data is, types of data, sampling techniques or data collection methods, bias, experimental designs, observational studies, single and double-blind, placebo, placebo effect, normal and non-normal data analysis, binomial probabilities, sampling variability and sampling distribution, one and two population confidence intervals, hypothesis testing with one and two populations, type 1 and type 2 errors, advanced hypothesis testing with multiple populations, correlations, and regression analysis.

What to Expect in this Course

The weekly load will be approximately 4-5 hours, but it totally depends on your learning style. In my opinion, if you are consistent and a person who does not procrastinate, you will be fine in this course. If you wait too long and do not finish your assignments, then it will be hard to manage. We will use the free online software Statkey for this class. You will have one project in this class. All the chapter exams will be held in person inside the classroom. We will talk more about the structure of the class.

Types of Assessments

You will have Canvas hw assignments, online discussion boards and proctored online exams.

Textbook Information

This course uses a Zero Textbook Cost book and I already uploaded the book chapterwise in Canvas.

Other Relevant Course Information

Again, consistency is the key, and attendance is important. Since this is a hybrid class, we will cover a lot in one period since we are meeting once a week. Please note that sometimes you feel like we did not cover this problem in class. Honestly, I cannot go over every single problem in the class, but I will teach you similar problems and how to address them. I will teach the concept; if you get the concept, the class will be very interesting to you.
