Hello everyone, and welcome to Noncredit ESL Level 4B! My name is Katie Simpson, and I will be your instructor for this course. I'm looking forward to meeting you all and having a fun semester practicing our English online together!

Course Description

This course is designed to develop English skills at the Intermediate High level through listening, speaking, reading, and writing including grammar, pronunciation, vocabulary, and everyday life situations. We will target relevant, everyday topics and life skills competencies while engaging in collaborative and active learning strategies. You will have the opportunity to work together with your classmates and of course, improve your English!

What to Expect in this Course

This is an Online Live course, so we will not meet on campus for any reason. However, we will meet synchronously on Zoom during our class hours. We will be using Canvas as our Learning Management System in this course. All of your materials, assignments, homework, quizzes, and tests will be on our class website on Canvas. Don't worry if this is your first time using Canvas! I will help you access and navigate your class website, and I will tell you everything you need to know. We are all in this together!

You will be expected to log in to Canvas regularly to view announcements, participate in activities, and submit assignments, quizzes, and tests. The majority of your assignments and homework will be video/audio/written discussion posts and replies, video/audio recording submissions, written assignment submissions, quizzes or tests. We will also listen to lectures or articles or watch videos or movies and complete follow-up activities such a summarizing, discussing, or answering listening comprehension questions after listening. We also will read texts or articles, answer reading comprehension questions, and complete follow-up activities. Additionally, we will practice writing paragraphs, emails, and blog posts. Throughout the course, there will be extensive grammatical practice of verb tenses and other level appropriate grammar. During our synchronous meetings, you will engage in pair or small group activities, discussions and conversations, and games.

Types of Assessments

There will be End of Level Tests at the end of this course in the areas of reading, writing, listening, speaking, and grammar on which you will receive a Pass or No Pass grade.
