¡Hola! I am excited to join you on your journey of learning Spanish language and culture! I will provide all resources and learning opportunities available to help you succeed in this course. Most students do well because they are focused and determined to complete the accelerated class. Don’t hesitate to ask for help or clarification on any concepts that you find challenging. ¡Manos a la obra!

Course Description

Designed to help increase ability to communicate in Spanish and acquire cultural competence. Spanish grammar review and application at the intermediate level focusing on practical and idiomatic usage as well as analyzing essays, poems, short stories in Spanish by famous authors from the Spanish-speaking world. Taught entirely in Spanish. UC/CSU transfer 5 units. Online delivery is through Canvas integrated to a language digital platform. 

What to Expect in this Course

The content follows a weekly modular configuration. Students are expected to complete all assignments (asynchronously) included in the weekly module adhering to the deadlines. Accelerated classes cover all content as full-term classes. It is imperative that students manage their time accordingly and set aside 12-18 hours weekly for this course. Modules open on Tuesday and close on Monday. Learning modules include practice and graded assignments in the four skills such as listening comprehension exercises, analyzing short videos, reading articles or short stories, writing compositions and short-essays and more.  Evaluations (available Friday through Monday) include chapter exams, a comprehensive final exam, and three required oral assessments (diagnostic, midterm, and final) conducted synchronously (in real time in the form of an interview 8-10 minutes) via Zoom TBA on week 1, 3 and 5.

 

Types of Assessments

Demonstrate competence by communicating through reading, writing, speaking, and listening in Spanish at the intermediate mid-level
Analyze the relationship between perspectives, practice, and products of the Spanish culture at the intermediate mid-level. Students will be able to demonstrate in oral and written expressions in Spanish about past, present and future events, and express preferences, feelings, beliefs and opinions.

Textbook Information

ZTC. No cost to students. Students will be directed to the Ebook materials in Canvas the first day of class.

Other Relevant Course Information

Complete your weekly module, develop a study routine, communicate with your instructor, practice productive skills with a Spanish tutor (available via Zoom TBA at no cost) and attend the weekly session (optional attendance, but highly encouraged) held by your instructor via Zoom.

Note- Students who fail to complete the Check-in Module due on the second day (of the first week of class) will be reported as No Show (automatic drop from the course). Additionally, students not completing academic work for seven consecutive days will be dropped from the course per College policy.

The Counseling Department offers appointments online. You can schedule an appointment by visiting the Online Counseling website. Counselors can help you map out a plan to reach your educational goals as well as advise you on course selection and registration.

Management of Stress and Mental Health

Often the pressure on our students is very strong, involving academic commitments, relationships, outside jobs and family pressure to name a few. The staff and faculty of College of the Canyons are here to see you succeed academically and care about your emotional and physical health. You can learn more about the broad range of confidential student services, including counseling and mental health services available on campus by visiting the Student Health & Wellness Center in the Student Services Building (across from the bookstore). The phone number is 661-362-3259 that you can call 24/7. You can also e mail for an appointment at StudentHealthCenter@canyons.edu. At the Canyon Country Campus the Health Center will be in the new Student Services Building.

Also, the National Suicide & Crisis Lifeline number is now 988. All students at COC are encouraged to enter that phone number in their cells. You can call it when you, or someone you know, is having thoughts of suicide or is in severe distress.

You can also now use the Crisis Text Line: Just text "Courage" to 741741. Someone will get back to you immediately. Its free, 24/7, and confidential.

Veterans Resource Center

The College of the Canyons Veterans Resource Center is a department within the Student Services Division at the college, created to help veterans and veteran dependents with applying to College of the Canyons, enrolling in classes, and requesting VA Education or Vocational Benefits.
