Dean Recognized for OER Leadership

December 13, 2019 – James Glapa-Grossklag, dean of learning resources, has received the President’s Award for Excellence at the 2019 Open Education Global Conference.

December 9, 2019 – The College of the Canyons Foundation has announced that the Silver Spur Celebration honoring Bruce Fortine will take place Saturday, March 14 at Santa Clarita Studios.

Bond Refunding to Save Taxpayers $8.3 Million

December 3, 2019 – College of the Canyons has refunded $31 million of outstanding general obligation bond debt.

Two New Electronic Systems Classes Offered

December 2, 2019 – The College of the Canyons spring 2020 class schedule will include two new electronic systems classes that will help students interested in the computer sciences find their path.

Football Game to Honor Saugus HS Victims

November 21, 2019 – All students and staff from the William S. Hart Union High School District and all SCV first responders (with ID) are invited to attend Saturday’s College of the Canyons football playoff game free of charge in light of the tragic events that occurred at Saugus High School on Nov. 14.

$749,760 Award to Provide Company Training

November 19, 2019 – The Employee Training Institute has received $749,760 from the Employment Training Panel to provide local companies with customized training programs.

Runners Invited to Thanksgiving Turkey Trot

November 15, 2019 – The Athletics Department invites community members of all ages to participate in the 11th annual Thanksgiving Turkey Trot benefiting the cross country and track & field programs.

Students Win LA Haunt Couture Award

November 13, 2019 – Five College of the Canyons interior design students won the People’s Choice Award at the International Interior Design Association’s LA Haunt Couture show on Thursday, Oct. 24.

College Announces Holiday Season Shows 

November 13, 2019 – With the holiday season just around the corner, the School of Visual and Performing Arts has a lineup of shows sure to delight family and friends of all ages.

Star Party Rescheduled for Nov. 15

November 8, 2019 – After being canceled on account of last month’s Tick Fire, the fall 2019 Star Party at the College of the Canyons Canyon Country campus has been rescheduled for Friday, Nov. 15.

Information Nights for Prospective Students

November 7, 2019 – To better assist high school seniors who are curious about making College of the Canyons their next step, the college will be offering information nights on Nov. 12 and 13 at the Santa Clarita Performing Arts Center (PAC) and at Canyon High School on Thursday, Nov. 14.

Registration Under Way for Winter Semester

November 4, 2019 – Registration is under way for the College of the Canyons winter semester, which boasts more than 300 class sections.

Molière’s 'Learned Ladies' Opens Nov. 15

November 1, 2019 – The Theatre Department present its production of “Learned Ladies” in the Black Box Theater for a week-long run beginning November.

Marc Cherry to Teach Theatre Master Class

October 31, 2019 – When College of the Canyons theatre students walk into Susan Hinshaw’s Scene Performance class on Wednesday, Nov. 6, they will find Marc Cherry, creator of the hit television series “Desperate Housewives,” sitting in the director’s chair.

College Recognized for Excellence in Transfer

October 22, 2019 – For the second year in a row, College of the Canyons has been named a Champion of Higher Education for Excellence in Transfer by The Campaign for College Opportunity.

Funding Received for Boykin Renovations

October 15, 2019 – College of the Canyons has received state funding to begin planning much-needed renovations to Boykin Hall, a 44-year-old science laboratory at the Valencia campus.

Canyon Country Campus to Throw Star Party

October 7, 2019 – The fall 2019 Star Party at the Canyon Country campus on Friday, Oct. 25 will be doubly significant as it coincides with the college’s 50th anniversary and Apollo 11’s moon landing.

Big Band Swing Concert Slated for Oct. 18

October 2, 2019 – The award-winning Studio Jazz Ensemble and Lab Bands present their season-opening “Big Band Swing” concert at the Performing Arts Center on Friday, Oct. 18.

Professor Nominated for Latin Grammy Award

October 1, 2019 – Music professor Yalil Guerra has received a Latin Grammy nomination in the Best Classical Album category for his album “Cuba: The Legacy.”

September 25, 2019 – The College of the Canyons Foundation has named Bruce Fortine the 2020 recipient of the Silver Spur Community Service Award.

Community Invited to Anniversary Homecoming

September 20, 2019 – As part of its 50th anniversary of service to the Santa Clarita Valley, the college welcomes the community to a special homecoming celebration on Saturday, Sept. 28.

Mariachi Arcoiris to Perform on Sept. 25

September 17, 2019 – The Art Gallery presents Mariachi Arcoiris del Los Ángeles as part of the college’s annual LatinX and Hispanic Heritage Cultural Festival.

College to Participate in Apprenticeship Program

September 16, 2019 – College of the Canyons has been selected to collaborate in a federal apprenticeship program that will prepare 5,000 workers for the workforce. 

Gallery 206 Presents Angela Divina’s ‘Salsa!’

September 11, 2019 – Gallery 206 presents the exhibition “Angela Divina: Salsa!” from Sept. 16 to Oct. 24. The solo exhibition of Divina’s most recent paintings and collages celebrates our relationship to food through the marriage of domestic science and studio painting.

College to Host Fall Job Fair on Oct. 4

September 10, 2019 – The Career Center will host its annual fall Job Fair on Friday, Oct. 4. The fair is scheduled 9 a.m. to noon in the West P.E. gymnasium at the Valencia campus.

University Center Open House Sept. 17

September 4, 2019 – Have you been putting off getting the bachelor’s, master’s or doctoral degree you need to advance in your career? On Tuesday, Sept. 17, an open house will be held at the Dr. Dianne G. Van Hook University Center to provide prospective students with information.

Football Kicks Off Season Saturday, Sept. 7

Sept. 3, 2019 – The College of the Canyons football program will kick off the 2019 season at 6 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 7 vs. Saddleback College, in the first of 10 regular-season games.

College No. 1 for Adult Learners in County

August 30, 2019 – College of the Canyons was ranked among the best U.S. colleges for adult learners in Washington Monthly magazine’s ranking of “Best Two-Year Colleges for Adult Learners.”

Employees Celebrated for Years of Service

August 28, 2019 – Every year, College of the Canyons honors staff, faculty members and administrators who have reached milestones in years of service to the college. This year’s Service Awards were especially significant as the college celebrates its 50th anniversary.

Wilk to Address Business Advocacy

August 27, 2019 – State Sen. Scott Wilk will present two Chancellor’s Circle workshops that will focus on how businesses leaders can influence and affect change with policymakers and legislators.

Auto Dealers Association Donates to College

August 26, 2019 – College of the Canyons has received a $20,000 donation from the Greater Los Angeles New Car Dealer Association in support of the automotive technology program. 

Measure E Bond Sale Yields $85 Million

August 14, 2019 – The second bond issuance of Measure E, the Santa Clarita Community College District general obligation bonds, were sold on Aug. 7, yielding $85 million to assist College of the Canyons in building out the Canyon Country campus and upgrading the Valencia campus.

Registration Under Way for Fall Semester

August 14, 2019 – It is not too late to register for one of more than 1,500 classes offered during the College of the Canyons fall 2019 semester. Students and community members can choose from more than 2,000 class sections in a wide range of academic subjects and career education disciplines.

Exhibit Kicks Off Hispanic Heritage Month

College to Participate in PLACE Initiative

July 23, 2019 – College of the Canyons is the only community college selected to participate in the Partnerships for Listening and Action by Communities and Educators (PLACE) initiative, a network of academic-community partnerships focused on civic-engagement and public-humanities work.

College Receives Career Education Grant

July 16, 2019 – Thanks to a recent grant from the California Community Colleges Chancellor’s Office, College of the Canyons will be able to offer more online education classes and lower the cost of textbooks by expanding the use of online textbooks. 

New Students Invited to Welcome Day

July 30, 2019 – For many college freshman students, the first day of school can be a daunting and nerve-wracking experience. To better assists its incoming class of freshman students, College of the Canyons will host Welcome Day on Friday, Aug. 9.

‘Meet the Grant Makers’ Slated for July 12

July 3, 2019 – The College of the Canyons Office of Grants Development will host a “Meet the Grant Makers” panel presentation and seminar on Friday, July 12, offering Santa Clarita Valley’s non-profits an opportunity to learn how to improve their fundraising efforts and see their organizations thrive.

Canyons Promise Serves More Students

June 26, 2019 – Canyons Promise, which waives tuition and fees for new full-time college students during their first year of study, will serve more students than ever when the new cohort enters College of the Canyons in fall 2019.

Cross Country Series Runs July 11 to Aug. 15

June 19, 2019 – Runners of all ages are invited to participate in the 46th Annual Cross Country Summer Series on Thursday evenings from July 11 to Aug. 15.

Partnership Created with Hart District

June 18, 2019 – College of the Canyons and the William S. Hart Union High School District have created a partnership that will offer college classes at high school campuses this fall.

Fire Tech Students Awarded Scholarships

$3 Million to Upgrade Fuel Cell Technology

March 21, 2019 – The college has been awarded $3 million by the South Coast Air Quality Management District to upgrade its fuel cell technology system.

College Offers Free Lunch to Students Feb. 7

January 30, 2019 – The College of the Canyons Institute for Culinary Education (iCuE) will be offering a free pasta bar to students on Thursday, Feb. 7 to help them fuel up for the spring semester.

College to Offer Google IT Certification Program

January 28, 2019 – College of the Canyons is one of 25 community colleges in the nation to have been selected by Jobs for the Future (JFF), a workforce development organization, to offer a Google Information Technology (IT) certification program.

Students to Participate in NASA Academy

January 28, 2019 – Two College of the Canyons students were selected to participate in the Lucy Student Pipeline Accelerator and Competency Enabler (LSPACE) Virtual Academy, an interactive and team-based student collaboration offered through NASA's Lucy Mission.

Continuing Education Center Holds Grand Opening

January 25, 2019 – A special grand opening event for the new College of the Canyons continuing education center on Soledad Canyon Road will be held on Tuesday, Jan. 29, 2019. The event will allow students and community members the opportunity to learn more about the centers programs and to register for free classes.

Chancellor Appointed to State Funding Committee

January 25, 2019 – College of the Canyons Chancellor Dr. Dianne G. Van Hook has been named to serve on the Community College Student Success Funding Formula Oversight Committee, which will oversee the implementation of Californias funding formula to ensure it meets the needs of the states 2.1 million community college students.  

Art Gallery Presents Multi-Sensory Exhibit

January 25, 2019 – The College of the Canyons Art Gallery is pleased to present an exciting new exhibition, A Better Nectar, by Jessica Rath with Robert Hoehn. This multisensory installation is based on the artists extensive research into co-evolutionary communication between flowering plants and their pollinators.

Committee Affirms Audits of Bond Spending

January 17, 2019 – The college district received the best rating possible in an independent audit of its bond measure expenditures. The Santa Clarita Community College Districts Independent Citizens Oversight Committee accepted the audit results, which showed that for the 16th year in a row, the district has properly accounted for all bond expenditures.

Gallery 206 Presents Chinese Folk Art

January 14, 2019 – Gallery 206’s “Vibrant Bounty: Chinese Folk Art from the Shaanxi Region” will carry visitors away to Shaanxi Province for a broader understanding of another culture.

January 11, 2019 – College of the Canyons has released a new mobile application designed to improve the COC experience for students, staff and community members alike.

College to Help Local Schools with STEM Learning

January 10, 2019 – College of the Canyons will partner with the Sulphur Springs School District to help support Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) / Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math (STEAM) learning experiences for students in grades 4-6 at five elementary schools.
