Hello Everyone! Welcome to Career Skills at College of the Canyons! This course is meant for anyone who needs a refresher or just wants to learn more about appropriate writing for the business world; however, it is also appropriate for those who may communicate with instructors, request refunds or concerns about a product you ordered, or any other reason you may be writing an email or letter for a specific purpose. There is no cost associated with the course - I will provide everything for you!  We will use a variety of instructional and collaborative methods, including videos, discussion boards, and handouts.

Course Description:

This course explores strategies for becoming more adaptable and managing stress in the modern workplace. Emphasis is placed on technological and social changes in the modern workplace.

Course Objectives

1. Review social and technological changes in the modern workplace. 

               2. Explore the career skills needed in the workforce by engaging in a four-step process. 

               3. Experiment with different work environments, roles, and tasks 

               4. Identify a variety of adaptive viewpoints and suggestions for being productive in the workplace. 

               5. Relate strategies for managing stress in the workplace. 

 

Student Learning Outcomes

What to Expect in this Course

Meeting Dates and Times: 100% Online via Canvas

 

Canvas: This online course utilizes a Learning Management System called Canvas, which will be used to access all course materials and assignments including videos, discussions, grades, and other course activities. Please log into Canvas by visiting https://coc.instructure.com on the first scheduled date of our course. Login information can be found below:

 

Username: The same as your MyCanyons username (example jdsmith)

Password: this is the word “students”

My Canyons Email Account

College of the Canyons student email is a free email service called My Canyons. Important information from College of the Canyons will be directed to this email account. This includes all financial aid and registration communications, wait list notifications, class schedule or room changes, instructor emails and emergency information from the college. LinkedIn Learning Video Playlist: Some courses in the Career Skills Program will use a video playlist from LinkedIn Learning. Students enrolled in this course will have access to LinkedIn Learning. An email with instructions on how to log in be sent out to your My Canyons email.

 

Mindful Co-Worker Certificate

We strongly encourage you to strive toward passing this course and all other Career Skills courses you take. If you earn a passing grade in all courses associated with a certificate you can earn a certificate of completion and digital badge! This will increase your value to future employers, give you something to show for all your hard work, and strengthen your resume and/or LinkedIn profile! More detailed information can be found on Canvas. In order to receive a Pass for attending this course, participants are encouraged to: 

    • Watch all videos
    • Fully participate in discussion boards

Canvas

This course can be accessed on the first day of class via Canvas at https://coc.instructure.com. Log into Canvas using your CanyonsID single sign-on:

  • CanyonsID Username is your COC student email address (Ex: username@my.canyons.edu)

The Learning Center (TLC)

Academic Accommodation Center (AAC)

College of the Canyons AAC provides educational services and access for eligible students with documented disabilities who intend to pursue coursework at COC. Online Counseling

The Counseling Department offers appointments online. You can schedule an appointment by visiting the Online Counseling website. Counselors can help you map out a plan to reach your educational goals as well as advise you on course selection and registration.

Management of Stress and Mental Health

Often the pressure on our students is very strong, involving academic commitments, relationships, outside jobs and family pressure to name a few. The staff and faculty of College of the Canyons are here to see you succeed academically and care about your emotional and physical health. You can learn more about the broad range of confidential student services, including counseling and mental health services available on campus by visiting the Student Health & Wellness Center in the Student Services Building (across from the bookstore). The phone number is 661-362-3259 that you can call 24/7. You can also e mail for an appointment at StudentHealthCenter@canyons.edu. At the Canyon Country Campus the Health Center will be in the new Student Services Building.

Also, the National Suicide & Crisis Lifeline number is now 988. All students at COC are encouraged to enter that phone number in their cells. You can call it when you, or someone you know, is having thoughts of suicide or is in severe distress.

You can also now use the Crisis Text Line: Just text "Courage" to 741741. Someone will get back to you immediately. Its free, 24/7, and confidential.

Veterans Resource Center

The College of the Canyons Veterans Resource Center is a department within the Student Services Division at the college, created to help veterans and veteran dependents with applying to College of the Canyons, enrolling in classes, and requesting VA Education or Vocational Benefits.
