Advanced Placement (AP)

Understanding Advanced Placement (AP) Credit at College of the Canyons

College of the Canyons awards college credit for qualifying scores on Advanced Placement (AP) exams. Please note:

  • Some AP exams may not meet CSU or UC general education or major preparation requirements.
  • In those cases, AP exams may only count as elective credit towards your degree.
  • Once approved, AP credit will be posted on your COC transcript as course equivalency, not just elective units.
  • There may be transfer unit limitations -- please speak with a counselor if you need assistance.

Because AP credit can affect your transfer and degree planning, we strongly recommend meeting with a counselor before submitting this form.

Which Outcome Fits What You Need?

There are three similar -- but different -- ways AP results can be used at College of the Canyons:

  • Prerequisite clearance: allows you to register for a course that requires a prior course.
  • Course credit: awards degree-applicable units based on AP results (counts toward the total units for your degree).
  • Course equivalency: posts on your COC transcript that you’ve completed the equivalent of a specific COC course—useful for planning and for transfer visibility. Caution: Equivalency is recorded as a “Pass/No Pass” grade only, which could be a problem if your program or transfer institution requires a specific letter grade. Speak with a counselor if this is a concern of yours before proceeding.

You need official AP scores for Course Credit and Course Equivalency. For Prerequisite Clearance, advisors/counselors can typically use unofficial AP results to clear you to enroll. Can you get all three? YES! Is is possible to get all three, and that can be a great way to save time on your degree goals.

Confirm You Have Official AP Scores On File

We cannot grant course equivalency until your official AP scores are on file with the Admissions & Records Office.

Before continuing, you must confirm that you have already submitted your AP scores through College Board and that you have waited at least 48 hours for them to upload into our system.

How to Send Your AP Scores (College Board)

If you are unsure if your official AP scores are on file, please contact the Admissions and Records Office to confirm. When emailing, please include your FULL name and either your Student ID number or your date of birth.
