Board of Trustees Names Officers for 2026

Jan. 9, 2026 – The Santa Clarita Community College District Board of Trustees named new officers and confirmed its 2026 meeting schedule on Friday, Jan. 9. Sharlene Johnson was selected by fellow trustees to serve as board president for 2026. "I look forward to working alongside my fellow board members to continue protecting the best interests of COC students and the Santa Clarita Valley community," Johnson said. The board also appointed Fred Arnold to serve as vice president and Dr. Edel Alonso to serve as clerk.

Superintendent-President Search Launched

Dec. 4, 2025 – The Santa Clarita Community College District has embarked on a nationwide search for a new superintendent-president. The search will be based on substantial feedback from students, faculty, staff, and administrators, as well as a profile that identifies the characteristics and skills the Board of Trustees seeks. The next superintendent-president must embody the district’s values and principles, and represent the district with honor and distinction.

Culinary Arts Receives $1 Million Gift

Nov. 18, 2025 – In a powerful demonstration of commitment to education, community, and the future of the culinary arts, the Cusumano family has made a landmark $1 million donation to College of the Canyons. This transformative gift – the largest single contribution ever received by the College of the Canyons Foundation – establishes both the Diana and Gary Cusumano Culinary Arts Endowed Program Fund and the Cusumano Family and Friends Endowed Scholarship Fund.

2025 Pathway Champion

College Named 2025 Pathway Champion

Nov. 6, 2025 – College of the Canyons has been named a 2025 Pathway Champion for excelling in Black Transfer-Level Math Success by The Campaign for College Opportunity.
The college is one of three California community colleges that supported the highest percentage of Black students to complete a transfer-level math course within one year of their initial enrollment during the 2023-24 academic year. "We remain dedicated to breaking down barriers and ensuring every student has the opportunity to succeed,” Acting Superintendent/President Dr. Jasmine Ruys said.

Occupational Therapy Assistant Program

New Healthcare Program to Debut in Fall '26

Nov. 4, 2025 – The College of the Canyons Occupational Therapy Assistant Program has been granted Candidate for Accreditation status by the Accreditation Council for Occupational Therapy Education, which allows the program to start enrolling its first 28-student cohort. Expected to launch in fall 2026, the program will prepare students to become skilled healthcare professionals working under occupational therapists to provide hands-on support and intervention.

Physics Club Launches Experiment

Into the Stratosphere

The College of the Canyons chapter of the Society of Physics Students successfully launched a high-altitude balloon carrying a scientific device that members designed and built. The payload included a bio-aerosol sampler to collect microorganisms in the stratosphere. The work is part of a scientific thesis by instructor and chapter advisor Kimberly Berthet. Read More

Student Project Soars

Student Experiment Soars

An experiment designed by College of the Canyons students soared into the upper stratosphere aboard NASA's High Altitude Student Platform scientific research balloon on Thursday, Sept. 4. The device, designed to capture atomic spectra of the sun's corona, was built by members of the college's Aerospace and Science Team. The balloon was launched from Fort Sumner, N.M.
