Information

What: Bill AB 2881 (Berman) Public Postsecondary Education: Student with Dependent Children.

Purpose: To remove barriers to academic success and degree attainment for student parents.

Who: Any student who has a child under 18 years of age who will receive more than half of their support from that student will receive priority registration beginning July 1, 2023.

California Work Opportunity and Responsibility for Kids (CalWORKs)

A Welfare-to-Work program for families with children.

Partners with the Department of Public Social Services to assist students with education, training and job skills.

Strives to assist students in obtaining educational degrees and certificates while gaining experience that leads to self-sufficiency.

Women, Infants, and Children Program (WIC)

Improves the nutrition and health of low-income families - leading to healthier infants, more nutritious diets and better health care for children, and subsequently to higher academic achievement for students.

Eligibility Requirements

  • Applicants' annual household income must fall at or below 185 percent of the U.S. Poverty Income Guidelines (currently $51,338 annually for a family of four) and deemed to have a nutritional risk.
  • Current recipients of Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP/CalFresh), Medi-Cal beneficiaries, or persons receiving Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF/CalWORKs), are adjunctively eligible.

California Earned Income Tax Credit (CalEITC)

A refundable cash back tax credit for low-to-moderate income Californians 

Eligiblity Requirements

  • You are at least 18 years old or have a qualifying child
  • You have earned income within certain limits
  • You have taxable earned income
  • You have a valid social security number or individual taxpayer identification number (ITIN) for you, your spouse, and any qualifying children
  • Not use "married/RDP filing separate" if married
  • Live in California for more than half the year

Young Child Tax Credit (YCTC)

Provides a credit up to $1,083 per tax return for Californians who qualify for CalEITC and have a child under 6 years old

Eligibility Requirements

  • Your total wages, salaries, tips, and other employee compensation (whether subject to California withholding or not), if any, do not exceed $32,490

  • You meet the CalEITC and YCTC requirements
